Playback issues: Songs going silent on Android app

We've received reports from Android users that the progress bar of a song keeps moving but there's no sound coming out. When the app is restarted, the progress bar goes back to the point where the song went silent.

Some users noticed that the issue doesn't occur when the features below are toggled off:

  • Gapless playback - found in Settings > Playback
  • Equalizer - found in Settings > Audio Quality

Hey everyone,

In case you're experiencing this issue, make sure to give it a like and provide the following info (if you haven't already):

  • Does the app switch to the next song or is it stuck on the current one (with the timer still counting)?
  • The day, time and time zone this has occurred on
  • Your device's OS version
  • The version of Spotify you're running
  • Whether this occurs when playing from the mobile device directly or when connected to another device (Bluetooth, headphones, etc.)
  • The troubleshooting steps you've tried so far
  • A video showing how things look from your end when this issue happens

Thanks! We'll pass the info on to our tech folks so they can look further into this. In the meantime, you can try the workaround of disabling Gapless playback and the Equalizer in the app's settings to see if that does the trick for you.

As always, rest assured we'll keep you posted here as soon as we have any new information to share, so Subscribe to the thread to stay tuned!

We have the same problem on a Sony Xperia 10 V. With the same premium account it is working on a Pixel 7 Pro. Both devices are up to date.

I wonder what other android phones this affects, it seems like the Pixel 6 exhibits the issue from the original post here. All I have heard from support is that the issue has been escalated to the developers. I hope something will come.of that but it seems unfair I am paying for a subscription service that doesn't reliably work on my flagship android phone that I use for 90% of my Spotify listening.

Hi @AlejaR,

I've made sure the app is completely up to date. The advice of reinstallinging however, I'm not happy to do; I'm not a fan of waiting hours for all my songs to redownload so that's not an option. As others are having the issue, however, and have reinstalled I would suggest that's not going to solve the problem anyway.

I never play music from the device directly, so I couldn't tell you if it doesn't happen without a Bluetooth device connected.

The version I have installed at the moment is 8.9.4.304 (side note, it would be real useful if you could (double) tap the version and have it go to the clipboard).

As noted in my original post, this occurs for multiple playlists, both those saved locally and those being streamed.

Having exactly the same issues as @ROBYER1 with the same device and android version.

Spotify Android v8.9.14.543

Sony Xperia 1v

Android 14 / Build 67.1.A.2.208

It happens with a bluetooth connection. I haven't encountered the issue yet when playing through phone speakers.

Please moderators can we escalate this. As already mentioned this issue exists and is widespread

AlejaR

Hey folks,

Thanks for your replies here and for the info shared.

@phpman, in this case, we'd like to gather some additional info. Did you notice if this started to happen after a specific event such as an OS update? If yes, please send us the details.

On another note, would you mind sending us the OS of the affected device along with the Spotify version you're running there? Is the playback coming from a Bluetooth device or are you playing content directly on your mobile device? It'd be awesome if you could send us more details about this behavior.

@Larnu, thanks for the detailed info you sent us. In this case, would you mind opening a different account on your device to see if you can replicate this behavior? No worries, opening a different account on your device doesn't delete the downloaded content from your account. You can ask for the account of a relative or a friend to open it on your device and check.

On another note, did you notice if this started to happen after a specific event such as an OS update? If yes, please send us the details. We suggest you make sure the firmware of your Bluetooth devices is up-to-date.

We'll be on the lookout!

Larnu

You'll need to give me a few days to test that, @AlejaR , as I'll need.to wait for my partner to get back.

No updates that I'm aware of. As this has occured on 4 different [Bluetooth] devices as well, I can guarantee that at least one of them hasn't had any firmware updates between the issue occuring and not as well.

Also this has only occured on my phone; I had Spotify running on desktop (Linux) for hours without issue. I might try and see if it occurs on Android TV later this evening and report back.

Larnu

I had Spotify on for 2-3 hours yesterday on Android TV, and the issue did not occur.

ROBYER1

This issue is specific to Android phones it seems. Does not happen on my android TV/android Google display screen. Only happens on my Sony Xperia 1 V

phpman

The problem is independent of an update. At the moment version 8.9.4.304 of Spotify is installed an OS version is Android 14 build 68.1.A.2.170.

We have no Bluetooth device, content is directly played on the device.

ROBYER1

Not being funny but this issue is reported and recreated by so many users, how has the development team not encountered this?! Madness.
