Playback issues: Songs going silent on Android app

We've received reports from Android users that the progress bar of a song keeps moving but there's no sound coming out. When the app is restarted, the progress bar goes back to the point where the song went silent.

Some users noticed that the issue doesn't occur when the features below are toggled off:

  • Gapless playback - found in the app's Settings > Playback
  • Equalizer - also found in Settings > Playback

Hey folks,

After quite a bit of investigating, the teams at Spotify were not able to pinpoint one specific root cause for the behavior. Via all the helpful comments of people here we found a couple of remedies for this and namely toggling off:

  • Gapless playback - found in the app's Settings > Playback
  • Equalizer - also found in Settings > Playback

These have been reported back to the tech teams and they are aware of this, yet right now in this thread we are receiving inconsistent reports of whether this is fixed. We would like to bring more clarity for both users and our developers, so we will move the discussion to a new place in our Help boards to gather fresh insights.

Cheers,

I tested something today.

Removed the current version of Spotify and downloaded an apk of an older version (8.8.96, December 15th 2023!). The older version works flawlessly, doesn't mute songs after skipping to the next song, faster at skipping to the next song.

This proves that somewhere between that version and current versions, something has changed in the code of the app.

Next I will run an apk comparison of both versions and see what differences are shown. Literally doing the job of a Spotify programmer for them. It's a joke.

If you want a stable version of Spotify back, I suggest you install an older version.

this has started on my android app. I have tried reinstalling the app however this is still happening. help?

hello. 1 user suggested to download an earlier version of the app. it
seemed to work for them.

Spotify only tells you about how to comment or search up your issues as pertained by keywords, its about control I guess. They don't encourage or explain how to post your own thread & on top of that spotifys playback is not reliable & crashes leading me to have to reload the webpage or clear cache on every single platform & device I have ever used which now I'm starting to think their becoming a music company targeted to specific audiences who may pay for this service then those who are still accessably able to use it without a premium option in which if thats not an excuse for why this issue is occuring then I guess Spotify just sucks officially now. I am just expressing my opinion

understandable. entirely understandable.

Hi-

I am an Apple user. Just did the new update yesterday and note I’m having this issue-the progress bar of a song keeps moving but there's no sound coming out. When the app is restarted, the progress bar goes back to the point where the song went silent.

Doctor_Tyranny1
hi. yes. I've had this problem on android and started this thread. I've
seen some posters saying to download an earlier version of the app. that
seemed to work.

Another Update: I previously mentioned that downloading an earlier version of the app fixed my issue....it did...for a day and then all of a sudden the issue started to happen again. The app did not update itself to the latest version because it was installed from an APK rather then Play Store.

I'm seriously considering moving away from Spotify, I don't want to but if I can't play my music in my car or headphones without having to tap pause and play every song just to get it going then there's no point, it's very frustrating and nothing is getting done about it.

Squirt_Why

I am having the same issue on my iPhone 14, running IOS 18.3.2 and running the Spotify Version 9.0.32.638. As for the time of day when it happens. WELL its really all the time when I am driving in my car. I have tried uninstalling and reinstalling Spotify, restarting/hard resetting my iPhone (multiple times), and even reconnecting my phone to my car (multiple times). This is so annoying and why am I paying for Premium if this is going to continue to occur all the time. 😞

Well, update..I tried the "solution" and it worked for a couple of days and now the issue is happening again. 😞 Why hasn't Spotify fixed this already.
