Playback issues: Songs going silent on Android app

We've received reports from Android users that the progress bar of a song keeps moving but there's no sound coming out. When the app is restarted, the progress bar goes back to the point where the song went silent.

Some users noticed that the issue doesn't occur when the features below are toggled off:

  • Gapless playback - found in Settings > Playback
  • Equalizer - found in Settings > Audio Quality

Hey everyone,

In case you're experiencing this issue, make sure to give it a like and provide the following info:

  • The day, time and time zone this has occurred on
  • Your device's OS version
  • The version of Spotify you're running
  • Does the app switch to the next song or is it stuck on the current one (with the timer still counting)?
  • Whether this occurs when playing from the mobile device directly or when connected to another device (Bluetooth, headphones, etc.)

If possible, feel free to include a video showing how things look from your end.

As always, rest assured we'll keep you posted here as soon as we have any new information to share, so Subscribe to the thread to stay tuned!

Still a problem and I've download and installed 2 updates since I reported this. As I hand my hands full earlier I managed to get over 6 minutes in a 2:25 long song with no sound earlier. The extra 3.5 minutes must be a hidden Spotify special. I took a video.

This is not a issue that is happening every time. When it happens there is no sound from the speaker/wired headphones/Bluetooth device. The UI shows that the track should be playing, and the progress bar keeps increasing. It will even increase past the duration of the track.
It is possible to recover from this by "seeking" (pressing the progress bar) or switching track. Pressing pause and play does not make the sound come back.

I think that there is a small chance that is happens each time a track is starting. I can reproduce it by looping over a very short track (~4 sec) or repeatedly pressing pause/play.

But I do get this issue during normal usage.

While looping over a track Spotify sometimes calls AudioTrack#pause() and then AudioTrack#play(). It does not do this on every restart of a track, but when the issue occurs I can see that pause() is called without play() being called after that.
What things are affecting whether the application pauses and starts the playback? Is there some debug version of the application with more logs that I can try?

Here we can see that the progress is way past the duration of the track.

I have seen this is several versions of Spotify but I am currently using version 8.9.6.458.
I am using Android version 14 but can reproduce this on older Android versions.

Hey @js-jeo_i6aaom,

Thank you for reaching out to the Community and welcome.

Since this issue could be caused by some damaged cache stored on your device, we'd first recommend performing a clean reinstall of the app by following the steps in this article. This process also ensures you're running the latest version of the app.

Also, would you mind confirming if you used your own account in the test you performed on other devices? If so, it would be great if you could have someone log in with their account on your device - such as a friend or a family member, to see if the issue persists. This will help us understand if it could be account-related or not.

We'll be on the lookout,

Hi @OscarDC,

Thank you for the reply.

I can reproduce this issue on several different clean flashed/factory resetted devices.

I can reproduce this on my own account as well as others accounts.

Is there some available debug version of the application that prints logs that could be used to debug this issue?

Howdy,

I'm also experiencing this issue. Started happening today and it is super aggravating.

Every second song won't play without audio.

Tried, logging out and in, re downloading my songs, and only happens on my phone with and without Bluetooth.

Spotify Version: 8.9.8.545

Android phone: Samsung Galaxy s10

(Spotify works perfectly fine on my apple tablet)

Same issue on my Sony Xperia 1 V

  • Android 14 (67.1.A.2.182)
  • Spotify 8.9.8.545
  • Highest quality setting (Wifi)
  • Happens at least when streaming tracks. Not tested with downloads.
  • Storage location is set to SD card
  • No difference between bluetooth headphones and smartphone speakers
  • Happens with Sony audio enhancements enabled or disabled
  • Happens also after deletion and fresh re-install of Spotify
  • No issues using other audio apps like Music App (Sony), Podcast Addict or Tolino App

I believe there was no issue before Android 14 (installed in November '23), but I'm not 100% sure.

  • First screenshot: regular playback (audio status: "normal")
  • Second screenshot: no playback, although Spotify looks like it's playing. (Audio status: "no media sound")

Hi @js-jeo_i6aaom,

Yes that issue is the same as mine, thank you for referring it.

Hi @slanotfound,

Interesting find about the Wavelet app beeing involved in the Pixel case!
Could you please share what Wavelet settings you used when reproducing this issue?
