Smart Shuffle keeps turning itself on

Hey folks!

 

Some of you have reported that Smart Shuffle is automatically turning itself on again after being switched off. This is now being looked into.

Note: The Smart Shuffle feature works on a playlist-by-playlist basis. If you turn it off on one playlist, it doesn't mean that it is turned off for all playlists.

Under investigation.

In order for us to have a better look into this, please provide us with the following details:

  • Your device + its OS version;
  • Your Spotify app version;
  • A screen recording of the issue;
  • Does this happen across devices or on a single device? E.g. if turned off on one device, does it re-appear on the same device, a different one or across all of them?
  • Does this happen when using the Connect feature or when playing normally?
  • What are the steps to reproduce the issue on your end?

Hey folks!

 

Thank you for the patience while we're trying to identify the root cause for this issue. It does not occur for everyone so it takes a bit longer to fix.

 

We'd like to ask you these two follow-up questions in case you're still experiencing the issue:

  • Is this behaviour only observable with larger playlists?
  • Does it happen when using a Connect device or when the playback is playing normally via your main device?

I'm experiencing this issue. I can't even play an album, it just keeps shuffling. I pressed the shuffle button to turn it off, but it keeps persisting. I'm on iOS 18.3.1 and spotify app version 9.0.22.638.

Smart Shuffle is on for all of my play lists.  I cannot play anything without smart shuffle choosing for me.  If I cannot choose my own music, why do I even have Spotify??????

I'm experiencing an issue where connecting to an external speaker turns on smart shuffle. Every time I connect to my JBL Bar speaker smart shuffle gets turned on and I lose any ability to control which songs spotify is playing. Some behavior across both the macOS app and the iOS app. Seems to be specific to the external speaker (JBL Bar) that I'm connected to. Oddly, restarting the speaker seems to have resolved the issue.

This is still an ongoing issue today 03/25/2025 is it really taking that long time? We see that the issue is an "Ongoing Issue" since last year. Please let us know when this would be resolved. I hope you have enough data to work on, I been an user for a long time but for the first time I actually thought of cancelling and moving to another service as this simple "feature" that is being pushed by obligation, should be a much simplier thing.

My Question or Issue

In some of my personal playlists (not all) smart shuffle is turned on and pressing it to turn smart shuffle off or change to regular shuffle does not work. The icon just glitches and then remains enabled. The queue also reflects no change and plays in chronological order.

My smart shuffle is bugged - it seems to only play songs from the dance and electronic or maybe the 'upbeat' filter. Most of my liked songs are not from this genre, so it's extremely obvious. I have all filters turned off.

Windows 11 desktop.  

 

Hitting the shuffle button never changes the shuffle.  On my android phone I can change it without issue.

Win11 main device. Shuffle button would change colour on hover, but never changed when clicked.

After going through menus (Help > About Spotify) to get version information *specifically to paste in this message*, it has started working again...

I have the same issue, started about a week ago. Its not only to sonos speakers, but casting in general. Got the same issue on chromecast.

Tried logging out and in, reinstalling spotify, disable shuffle in sonos app, relinking accounts, etc. Nothing works. 

As soon as i start casting shuffle or smart shuffle turns on, and it is impossible to turn off.
