Spotify + Chromecast Audio Connection Keeps Dropping

My Question or Issue

Hi. We have 3 Chromecast Audio devices on my home network connected via a single Motorola MG7315 modem/router. All devices are confirmed to be running the latest firmware. We cast Spotify from either an iPhone XR or iPhone 8 running iOS 13. We have the latest Spotify app version on our phones. All Chromecast audio devices have <60 dBm signal strength. Lately we've been having an issue where Spotify is randomly dropping the connection to the Chromecast Audio devices. It doesn't matter whether one of us is casting to a single Chromecast Audio device or group of devices. But if a group of devices is playing, they all stop together when the casting "drops." Sometimes the issue happens several times within in an hour, requiring us to reconnect the device within the Spotify app each time to resume casting. It's super frustrating! The drops seem to happen at random, and it doesn't matter which phone is casting.  The phones can be sitting untouched/locked when the casting is interrupted, so it doesn't seem like obvious app interference on iOS. We only have ~8 devices connected to the home network, and there's nothing out of the ordinary about them (e.g., a TV, a couple of iPhones, MacBooks, Chromecast Audio devices), so it's not obvious that there would be device interference. Please help with ideas! The Spotify/Chromecast Audio setup had been working really well for a couple of years before this issue started presenting itself a couple months ago. Thank you so much!

Hey folks,

Thank you for reporting this issue to us.

We just wanted to let you know that the right folks are looking into this. We'll be marking this as NRN, as our teams have already rolled out several improvements to improve the experience reported. As we're always rolling out improvements in the app, we'd recommend making sure to keep all your devices up to speed with any updates so you won't miss the latest.

We're not able to provide an exact timeline for a fix, but we'd recommend always keeping your Spotify app up to date to ensure you're on the latest version.

Thanks again!

Hey there folks,

We really appreciate sharing all your details so far!

It'd be really helpful for the teams looking into this if you could let us know an approximate timestamp of when this happens.

We'll make sure to pass it on, thank you 🙂

For me audio drop outs are fairly regular but hard to provide specific times.

I noticed today at around 11.37am (GMT+2) the audio started cutting off for around two songs worth. During one song it stopped completely and needed to be restarted from the app.

During the afternoon 2-4pm I had a reasonable period of uninterrupted music. When I left my apt at around 415pm it began to drop out for around 10min. (According to my wife).

I notice that some days are better than others. The last few have been better compare to when I last posted here.

Cheers,

P.

PS Connecting to my chrome cast audio devices still takes longer than it should (30sec to 1min) and usually requires 2 or 3 attempts to connect to the CCA dongle. Any one else have this issue?

This is super annoying. I have 4 different chromecast devices and I have this issue on all of them. Some days it will work perfectly fine for hours, other days it will stop playing and crash every 10mins.

- iOS 13.3.1 iPhone XS

- Spotify v. 8.5.52.935

- Chromecast 1 (cast firmware v1.36.159268)

- Chromecast 2 (cast firmware v1.42.172094)

- Chromecast 3 (cast firmware v1.42.172094)

- Toshiba 55L711U18 with built-in chromecast (cast firmware 1.28.102425)

- Connect via Spotify app

Not very likely at all - but what if old versions of Spotify on one of my computers is interfering. I noticed less problems (using Android/Chromecast) since i uninstalled the Windows-Store version of Spotify from my laptop, installed it anew downloaded from website, and shutdown Spotify on other computers.

Tip: for a timestamp lets all try to use UTC or something from https://www.unixtimestamp.com , for example  2020-04-13T11:04:29+00:00  (the ISO8601 format, because unambiguous and includes timezone)

  • The Exact version of Spotify: Latest

  • Make and model: Google Pixel 3a, Samsung S8
  • OS: Android 10
  • Spotify: 8.5.51.941
  • The Chromecast firmware: 1.42.172094
  • Are you playing via voice commands or Connect? Voice commands and Connect
  • An approximate time and date that this happened: daily, tend to play music between midday and 10pm

With both voice commands and Connect the music will stop playing after around three songs, 9 times out of 10 in between songs (so one will end and the next won't start). Upon going into the app you can see that the next song is playing (often on 5 or so seconds so seems to be triggered by the app opening) but there is no audio. Skipping to the next song (usually triggered by voice command i.e. OK Google, skip) sorts the problem as the next song then plays fine, but the issue starts again three or so songs later.

Happens every time after 10 to 20 minutes or so. Other apps (e.g. Soundcloud) does not have this issue.

Same for me. I have been trying different setups, reinstalling everything, switching settings etc. I even bought a new network router as it was getting old. Nothing works and its very random. All other apps work seamless (soundcloud eg) with chromecast, just not spotify.

it is terribly frustrating.

please, dear Spotify developers, solve this issue for us.
