Spotify Connect not working on multiple 3rd party devices

Recently there have been numerous reports that Spotify Connect is not working on 3rd party devices like wireless smart speakers, multiroom speakers, sound systems and receivers.

It's either possible to connect to the speaker using the Spotify Connect picker, but songs cannot be played and playback cannot be controlled, or the speakers appear grayed out and cannot connect at all.

Hello everyone,

We are aware that this issue has been going on for quite some time now. Thanks to your reports and immense help in troubleshooting this, we are happy to say that this should now be fixed. The information provided from members of the community greatly helped the tech teams from Spotify. They worked together with different speaker manufacturers over the last few months in order to pinpoint what was causing this connection issue and were able to sort it out.

If you're still having issues playing music on your sound systems via Spotify Connect, we recommend the following:

  • Check if there are any firmware updates available for your speaker and install them.
  • Reboot your router and re-connect all devices to the network.
  • Alter your router's DNS to 8.8.8.8.

Don't hesitate to reach out again if the issue comes back! We'll do our best to get on it right away, so that you can enjoy your music.

Hey there folks,

Thanks for reaching out about this here in the Community.

@Kim_ras, great troubleshooting so far, we can add a few more steps to make sure we've covered all bases. You mentioned that you've already reinstalled the app, but would you mind going through the steps of a clean reinstall, as it's more thorough than a normal one? In case the issue persists, we recommend trying with a different network, for example creating a hotspot on your phone and using that to see if that makes the difference.

@JohnnyHefty, first up, we suggest that you try restarting your router and check if that makes the difference. If this doesn't do the trick, would you mind checking if the firmware of your speakers is up to date?

Keep us posted.

JohnnyHefty

Yeahh I booted my router, reinstalled spotify on both pc and phone, and it's the same.

Firmware is up2date.

I can listen to raidio via the multiroom app without any problems

Hey folks,

Thanks for your replies.

Could you let us know if this started happening after a specific event such as an update?

On another note, just to confirm, have you tried hard resetting your speakers with the steps @dinomight sent previously?

Lastly, we suggest that you make sure the firmware of your speakers is up to date.

We'll be waiting for your replies.

Hi again

im not sure what triggered the problems with using my speakers with Spotify.

I can confirm doing a reset on the speaker and paring it back with my Wi-Fi.

speakers are up to date on firmware. I run with the ‘automatically update speakers’ setting but checked manually if they are up to date.

I'm in the United States on the Spotify Premium plan, and I can no longer control any of my speakers (Amazon Echo, Yamaha Receiver) using Spotify Connect from any devices (iPhone Xs, MacBook Pro, Web Player). Everything was working two days ago, and then suddenly it just stopped working for no reason. When I choose either device from the Devices menu, it just says Connecting... and never plays anything.

I've ensured the following:

  • All devices are on the same WiFi network
  • Your Spotify app is up-to-date
  • All devices’ software is up-to-date

And tried the following:

  • Restart the Spotify app
  • Close any other apps you’re not using
  • Restart your devices
  • Restart your WiFi

I've looked on Twitter and through the Community site, and no one else seems to be experiencing this issue.

Please help.

Hi again to everyone!

In order to check this further, could you send us the model and firmware version of your speakers? Also, send us over the model and OS version of your mobile devices, as well as the Spotify version you're running.

Lastly, let us know if this happens with other streaming apps.

We'll be looking for your reply.

I can confirm that hard reset does nothing for me...

And my speakers are all up-to-date..
