Spotify Free (ads) causes browser to launch on malware / virus websites

There's something pretty alarming going on right now with Spotify Free. This started a several hours ago. If you have Spotify Free open, it will launch - and keep on launching - the default internet browser on the computer to different kinds of malware / virus sites. Some of them do not even require user action to be able to cause harm.

I have 3 different systems (computers) which are all clean and they are all doing this, all via Spotify - I am thinking it's the Ads in Spotify Free. I hope this has been noticed and Spotify staff are fixing it - fast. But it's still puzzling something like this can actually happen.

From what I have read so far I have understood this issue has been happening with Spotify Free before. Nevertheless, it's really dangerous for users and amazing how it has not been fixed. These malware launches probably happen during showing certain ads but malware / virus sites have nothing to do with the advertisers. Tells how big of a problem it seems to be (hacked server, spotify admin accounts etc)...

Hey,

We've identified an issue where a small number of users were experiencing a problem with questionable website pop-ups in their default browsers as a result of an isolated issue with an ad on our Free tier. We have now identified the source of the problem and have shut it down. We will continue to monitor the situation. If you see this issue again, please let us know the exact date and time in this thread.

Thanks as always for bringing your reports to the Community!

I am having this issue and I'm a premium member. Every time I click on many of the buttons within the app - i.e. save, play, view profile pop-ups appear in my browser!

Will we be expecting a fix soon?

To be quiet honest, it does the same thing for me as well !

it opens with no request certain websites that i highly suspect they are malware/virus content !

I don't know why spotify would choose such type of ads to integrat in their desktop version.

hope you find a solution quickly !

thanks

my problem is 2 fold...

1st:

there is an ad that is always present on upper right by the "minimize/maximize/X" area (ads by BWPlayer). This is new.

2nd:

when i click on the player, such as "play", "pause", "playlists", "volume", etc... It kicks of ads in my default browser.

I've noticed this for a few days (maybe passed 4 days or so) abd it's amazingly frustrating!

Help!

Hi, it's happening to my Soptify too, and I have Spotify Premium. It started today. I uninstalled and reinstalled spotify - the adware still pops-up, everytime I click 'search'. There are also adds inside the Spotify program itself. Underneath it says 'adds by GeoSmartDNS'. Hope this will be fixed soon!

Today, with Spotify (free) opened, my GPU (GTX 1060) is gone at 96°C without starting the fans. This is crazy.

I'm getting this problem now.  Looking at this thread it seems like there isn't a fix for it and that Spotify have decided not to resolve the issue but I might be wrong?  Can it be fixed, or do I just stop using spotify web browser altogether?

Yo, so it’ll eventually go away but it was weird, I bought premium just to make sure and so I’m gonna see what happens cause it just expired
