Spotify Using Excessive Disk Writes and I/O

I've recently been trying to track the excessive writing going to my hard drive and it appears the culprit is Spotify. In the attached image I was listening to music for a couple of hours and Spotify has already written 15GB to disk. This is incredibly excessive and will kill drives over time. I've tracked nearly 100GB of writes in the course of a day if I'm using Spotify actively.

This has been mentioned before by others:

I left Spotify open on my computer overnight- it was NOT streaming, just the application sitting there...it wrote over 50GB to disk just sitting there! What is going on?

Hey @firef! Thanks for bringing this to the Community.

Can you try reinstalling the app with these steps and restarting your device? If that doesn't help, can you send us your OS and Spotify version? That'd be super helpful.

Hope to hear back from you soon 🙂

Hey @firef,

Do you still need us to lend a hand? If so, can you let us know if reinstalling the app helped at all?

We're here, and always happy to see what we can suggest.

Have a lovely day 🙂

It's also happening on latest MacOS beta, zero active streaming, the app is just idling in the dock, yet has up to double digit Gigabytes of disk writes per day according to "Activity Monitor".

Has this been fixed?

I have version 1.0.42.151.g19de0aa6 and the issue is still there. 130gb in one day

I'm on Linux and this occurs every time I start Spotify and sometimes when I come back to it (receives focus).  This thing thrashes my HDD more than my local minikube cluster, absolutely bonkers!  As a senior dev I can say with confidence this is definitely not user error, no application needs to read/write like this, ever.
