My Question or Issue

Spotify (only the desktop app, web app works fine) keeps muting everything that makes sound after I pause my music. Background sound plays fine when I play music over it, but when I pause Spotify the background sound completely stops. Doesn't matter if it's a Youtube video, a game, or whatever, it just stops everything and everything is muted until I close down Spotify. This is most likely an issue with Bluetooth, as I use Bluetooth headphones and when I plug my headphones in with an aux cord the issue goes away.

I've tried re-installing the desktop app and restarting my computer, as well as updating the drivers for my laptop's Bluetooth card, but none of these seemed to do anything.

This is really getting on my nerves.

Hey there folks,

We really appreciate all your reports so far!

We've passed them on to our tech team, and they're investigating this.

We don't have an exact timeline for a fix, however we'd recommend making sure that the app is always updated on your device. You can follow the steps provided here.

Thanks!

Same for me.

Using the current version of Spotify for MacOS (1.0.94.262.g3d5c231c) and Audio-Technica ATH-M50XBT wireless Bluetooth Headphones with Microphone.

Pressing the "Pause" button with the mouse also triggers a system wide mute, not just with the media buttons. Muting spotify does not trigger this, however.

Edit: I'm running MacOS version 10.14.1

Nothing of the above solved ir for me, in my case only spoty goes mute after pause, all the rest keeps working just fine. It seems like, to me at least, it looses track from which device i'm listning from, to get it working back again I have to open the webplayer and click the device i'm listing from at the bottom righ menu, hope it helps!
By the way this happens on windows player (running win10 Enterprise 1803)

That has nothing to do with Spotify. I recently had the same issue.

This is caused by the feature of AVRCP (Controling music via media keys on the headset/earphone). You have to simply disable the corresponding AVRCP Driver of your bluetooth device in the Windows Device Manager. For example see the attached screenshot.

Hi @Peter

Any updates on this matter? Has this been reported?

Peter

Hey folks,

Thanks for keeping us posted on this.

Could those of you still experiencing this issue let us know how exactly you are pausing Spotify. It could be either by:

  • clicking the Pause button in the player
  • using the media keys on your keyboard
  • using the controls on your (Bluetooth) headset
  • clicking the Pause button on a device which is being used as a remote control for the desktop app via Connect

Once we have this information, we will be able to look into this further.

Thanks! We'll be looking out for your replies.

Peter,

I am also having this issue on MacOS 10.14.2. I tried all four of the ways you listed to pause the music, and they all resulted in the issue.

Hey!

I have MAC OS High Sierra 10.13.6 (17G65).
Spotify 1.0.96.181.gf6bc1b6b

Music is muted on bluetooth speaker (Ultimate Ears Boom 2) while pressing stop on computer application. Music is muted somehow on any browser, though there is no sign showing it got muted. It feels like spotify mutes speaker.

To play any sound on browser like youtube video or facebook video I have to turn off spotify.

Hey there @brunorski and @maxlschu,

Thanks for letting us know these details.

If you haven't already, we'd recommend double checking the Bluetooth settings on your Mac devices, including any related to the AVRCP protocol @viertypen mentions. For more information on this, you may need to perform further troubleshooting with the device's manufacturer.

Let us know how you get on 🙂

I have tried looking for those advanced options on my computer, but they don't seem to be readily available on MacOS like they are on Windows. From the additional replies, it seems like this issue is happening with multiple kinds of bluetooth devices and multiple versions of MacOS, leading me to believe this is actually some sort of Spotify related bug.

Happens for me doing any of the following:

  • Pause from the play/pause button of Spotify App
  • Pause using media keys on macbook
  • Pause using my phone as remove via Connect

My bluetooth speaker does not have a play/pause button, so I can replicate this one.

My setup:

  • MacBook Pro (Retina, 13-inch, Early 2015)
  • Mac OS Mojave - Version 10.14.2 (18C54)
  • Spotify version: 1.0.96.181.gf6bc1b6b

Hope this helps.
