Spotify stops playing after an ad

We've received reports that Spotify pauses after an ad and the playback cannot be resumed. This seems to affect multiple platforms including desktop, mobile, and TV.

The behavior is currently being investigated.

Hey folks,

We just wanted to let you know that the right folks are looking into this.

We're not able to provide an exact timeline for a fix, but we'd recommend always keeping your Spotify app up to date to ensure you're on the latest version.

Thanks again!

Hey everyone,

Thank you again for sharing the requested details.

All reports have been forwarded to the team investigating this, however, they're still having difficulties tracing the root cause and need your help.

For this you'll just need to confirm you're willing to participate and share your device details if you haven't already. If you have, just share your current Spotify app version so we have the most up-to-date info.

Once you've done so, we'll post a confirmation in the thread that your account is being monitored by the devs and you'll need to reproduce the issue again giving us the timestamp of its last occurrence.

Hopefully, this will allow the team to spot the error and fix it.

Looking forward to your replies 🙏

It is December 2023 and this just started happening to me both at work and at home.  Different PCs, same free account.  Never had this problem until a few weeks ago.  Some days it plays through, other days it just stops at an ad and won't allow me to play the ad or restart the music.  It randomly starts working when it wants to.  Closing/starting the app doesn't always fix it.  Very strange and very annoying.

Spotify hangs up on commercials after a few songs.  This has been going on for months!  I've been patient assuming a software update would eventually come to fix it but to no avail.  I'm running Spotify on an Amazon Fire Cube connect to our entertainment center with the latest software for the Amazon OS and Spotify as of December 2023.    If I Force Stop Spotify and Clear the Cache it will work for a few more songs, then hangs up again.  It's not easy to navigate to the app control where this can be done so that adds to the frustration.  Disappointed problem because I love Spotify.  I'm about ready to uninstall it, though, and use other music streams -- Sirius XM, Amazon Music, Google Music, Apple Music, etc.

I am having this issue as well! I'm on an HP pavilion x360. I am running Spotify for Windows(64 bit) 1.2.26.1187.g36b715a1. I have tried reinstalling as well as clearing the cache. It seems to happen most often on the Brachs, and Lowe's ads.

My Question or Issue

I was listening to music on my Google Home, and the music stopped. Looking at the Spotify app, it was trying to play the Walgreens ad, but the ad isn't loading fully. Screenshot of the ad attached. It's currently at 7+ minutes of a 30-second ad! Unfortunately, since it's not loading, none of my music is playing on any device. I cleared the app cache and force stopped the app, but it is still stuck on that ad every time.

I am having the same problem with the desktop version.

I have uninstalled and reinstalled the app.

This just started happening after an update a few weeks ago.

My Question or Issue

Spotify is now basically useless on my account, whether using the desktop or the browser version. I continually hangs trying to play ads. The only way to work around it is to pause and play the add. Then it will hang on the next ad.

I have to pause and play each ad so it will continue with my playlist.

Not worth it. There are other services that work better than that.

It's a shame that the this can't be fixed.

Update: I found out the problem. Playing with the "Now Playing View" open will cause the ads to hang. If you close the "Now Playing View" the ads will play and finish as they should. Thus keeping your music playing without any pauses.

Hi @bavientjr

Usually, when issues like this occur to both the desktop app and the web player, it requires you to clear your Host Files.

Please follow these steps.

Let me know if this helps! I'll be awaiting your response.
