Using Spotify on iPhone and using Siri on Mac (with Spotify Open) stops music

I regularly work on my laptop while listening to music on my iPhone. Spotify is usually open on my Mac while I do this, but I am not listening to music from it.

Because I'm using a Macbook Pro with the touchbar, there are many occassions where my finger slips on the keyboard, activating Siri on my Mac.

For some reason, this will actually stop the music playing on my primary listening device (my iPhone).

I would expect Spotify to stop playing should I use Siri on my primary listening device, however, using Siri on a secondary device should do one of 2 things: disconnect the secondary listening device (the one that displays the green bar with "Listening on <device>"), or muting the Spotify app on the secondary device.

I just did a little testing, and this seems to only affect Desktop version - Using Siri on another iPhone that is listening to Spotify does not affect the primary playing device.

From this, I've come up with the following scenarios:

Ability: Listen to music with spotify on a device while using Siri on a mac

Scenario: Current Behaviour when turning on Siri
Given I have Spotify open on my Mac
And I am playing music on my Spotify app on another device

And the bar displaying "Listening on <device>" is shown on my Mac
When I use Siri on my Mac

Then my music stops playing on all devices showing "Listening on <device>"

Scenario: Current Behaviour when turning off Siri
Given I have Spotify open on my Mac
And I am listening to my music on another device
And I have turned on Siri on my Mac
When I exit the Siri dialog
Then Spotify begins to play on all devices that were "Listening on <device>"

Scenario: Expected Behaviour when turning on Siri
Given I have Spotify open on my Mac
And I am playing music on my Spotify app on another device

And the bar displaying "Listening on <device>" is shown on my Mac
When I use Siri on my Mac
Then the Spotify on my Mac should be muted
But my music should continue to play on my devices

Scenario: Expected Behaviour when turning off Siri
Given I have Spotify open on my Mac
And I am listening to my music on another device
And I have turned on Siri on my Mac
When I exit the Siri dialog
Then the Spotify on my Mac should unmute
And my music should continue to play on my devices

Hey @kfairns, welcome to the Spotify Community!

Thanks for the detailed info sent. We'd like to try a couple of thing to get to the bottom of this.

Can you confirm if the same thing happens while having the MAC wired? Also, let us know if this occurs when using the Offline Mode.

Let us know how that goes.

@RodrigoPalma, I cannot currently confirm whether or not it happens on a wired connection (I haven't got access to a USB internet cable that is required for wired internet on a Macbook Pro), however I can confirm that it doesn't occur when in offline mode.

It seems to occur when the "Listening on <device>" message is active within Spotify, which doesn't appear while offline.

I would assume that it would happen while on a wired connection, as the two devices didn't share the same network while I was running my initial tests.

Thanks for your reply @kfairns!

In this case, can you give it another try after you make sure that both devices are connected to the same WiFi connection? If it happens again, it'd be worth to restart your internet connection if possible.

Also, we'd like you to try the following:

  1. From your iPhone play some music one more time.
  2. Make sure that the Spotify app is not open on your Mac.
  3. Try to use Siri from your Mac and check if it stops the Spotify playback on your iPhone.

Keep us posted.
