[iOS] Connect not working when Spotify is not granted access to Mobile Data

Plan

Premium (Family)

Country

Germany

Device

(iPhone Xr, iPad Air Gen. 1)

Operating System

(iOS 12.4)

My Question or Issue

When I block Spotify from using my mobile data plan in the iOS settings, then Spotify connect doesn't work anymore for my Sonos and UPnP devices.

I'm on WiFi (the same as the devices I want to connect to), mobile data is turned on, but I don't allow Spotify to use it.

Once I allow Spotify to use mobile data or disable mobile data for the whole OS, Spotify actually picks up all devices on my network.

It seems like there is a bug that stops Spotify from listening to broadcasts on my wifi.

it's very odd that settings that concern cellular use only affect the receival of local packages on my wifi.

Pls fix this issue, it's annoying.

workaround for now: allow spotify to use mobile data or disable mobile data manually every time you enter your home/wifi.

This bug doesn't exist on Android. There I can block mobile access and Spotify connect keeps on working just fine.

Hey folks,

Thanks for your patience while we looked into this issue.

We’re happy to say that this should now be fixed for everyone with the latest update.

Make sure your app is updated by performing a clean reinstall of the app on your device.

Thanks! Stay awesome 😉

Spotify Connect stopped working with my Sonos system about two weeks ago.  Since then, it would show Sonos speakers randomly and seemingly without any pattern (however, once connected to a speaker, it never drops).  Since it stopped working, I've factory reset my router, all Sonos speakers, traded in my iPhone, and still the same problem.  I set up resreved IPs for the Sonos speakers and my iPhone through my router's DNS, doesn't seem to help.

Strangely though, if I initiate Spotify Connect to one of the Sonos speakers (my MacBook can see only one of two twin Play:1s and a Sonos One), the connection will hold (e.g., I can start a Spotify Connect session from MacBook to Sonos One, see the Sonos One on my iPhone's Spotify app, go to Sonos, switch the output speaker for the One to any other speaker, and it stays with it and is fine as long as I don't end the session; the moment the session is interrupted, the speaker disappears from Spotify).

I've tried all the workarounds suggested here, from disabling cell data for all apps, some apps, no apps, to completely resetting/rebooting everything in my apartment and still this is happening.  Everything else works absolutely fine, including Spotify on the Sonos native player, but we all know how garbage that is.  Help!

  • iPhone XS, iPhone 11 Pro
  • iOS 12, iOS 13.0, 13.1.1, and 13.1.2
  • Sonos Play:1, Sonos Beam, Sonos One (Gen 2)
  • Spotify version 8.5.25.760

@JDPBJDI'm sorry to tell you this, but your issue is different from the one everyone here is experiencing.

For us Spotify connect works correctly on all other devices except ios devices.

For us, MacBooks aren't affected.

I recommend you to chat with the Spotify support (live chat, that's option 3, I think), especially since you are a paying customer.

https://www.spotify.com/about-us/contact/

Also be prepared to tell them which MacBook you are using and what your router model is.

Edit: I had to replace the link above, the first one was incorrect, now it should work fine 🙂

Same here with Bose Soundtouch Speakers. We wondered for months why it worked for all family members but my daughter, especially as my wife has the same iPhone (5 SE).

Interestingly, it also works on the iPad that doesn't have any mobile connection at all (WiFi version), and, of course, on the Android devices.

Yesterday, I finally found out what the problem was, and now that wanted to post it here, I found this post.

The problem still persists:

Spotify version: 8.5.26.893

devices:

iPad Air iOS 12.4.2

iPhone Xr iOS 13.1.2

iPhone 6s iOS 13.1.2

Connect Devices:

Sonos Playbar, Play:1, several Play:3, Play:5, Sky Q (television receiver) via UPnP

All of them are up-to-date (that ought to be enough info, I'm too lazy to look up all of their exact version numbers)

The CLEAN REINSTALL does NOT FIX the issue - after going through that over 2 hours on 4 devices - this problem still persists. This was one of the biggest features of Spotify - being able to play on Sonos and it has just stopped working across all devices now.
