[iOS] High battery drain with Spotify on iPhones with iOS versions 14.8 and 15.0

Hey folks,

Thanks for your reports about battery drainage while updating from iOS 14.8 to .15 on both firmware versions during the past days.

We’ve passed your info on to the relevant team and we can confirm they are currently looking into it.

If you’re experiencing this issue, make sure to click +VOTE and Subscribe to the thread to be notified of any developments.

Aside from trying restarting and/or a clean reinstall of the app, it'd be great if you'd give disabling Background App Refresh a shot: this could be found under Settings -> General -> Background App Refresh.

Thanks! We’ll keep you posted and let you know as soon as we have any updates on this.

Good news!

There’s a new version (8.6.64) of Spotify available in the App Store. The latest version includes fixes and improvements that should eliminate the stability and performance issues affecting a subset of iOS users.

If you have automatic updates switched on, you should have the newest version shortly.  If not, you’ll have to update the App manually. You can find step-by-step instructions for updating Spotify here.

Issue

For the last 4-5 days (roughly coincides with updating to iOS 14.8), every time I use the Spotify app my phone eventually start heating up and the battery drains a lot faster than usual. I can't have the application running for more than 15-20 min without my phone getting noticeably warm and losing 10-15% of my phone charge. I've followed the steps previously listed here: 1) I Disable Background App Refresh on my Spotify App 2) Closed all of my other applications 3) restarted my device 4) soft uninstalled Spotify 5) clean uninstalled and reinstalled the app (following the online instructions) 6) re-started my phone again after leaving it off for a about 30 min. None of these steps helped. I've been a Spotify customer for several years and have always liked the product, but I can't use the app at all right now so I'm simply considering switching over to Apple Music.

I’ve been in the 15 beta for a few months (I’m on the official 15 as of yesterday) and this problem started after updating to the newest version of Spotify a few days ago, before updating to iOS 15 proper.

I am having the exact same issue. In 1.5 hours of listening it drained by battery 60%, this is a new issue that started within the last week. Phone is also getting very hot.

I suppose it´l get fixed sometimes next year 🙂 they got our money and don´t care... Least they could do is release previous version that was ok instead of this**bleep**...

Huge battery drain and phone gets very hot.  I noticed that recently Spotify was significantly draining my battery, so I did a little test. I closed all background apps and listened to about a 25 minute podcast over the phone speaker with the screen off.  The phone started at 100% charge. After 25 minutes it was at 90% and hot to the touch (and everyone knows that the iPhone shows 100% charge longer than other phones, so this is a massive drain). I then immediately closed Spotify and opened Apple Podcasts and listened to a 30 minute podcast, also over the phone speaker with the screen off.  After 30 minutes the battery was showing 88% and the phone stayed cool the whole time.  I checked the Battery section in the phone settings over the past few days and all the app usage looked normal EXCEPT Spotify, it was always very high.

Also having this problem. Got the iPhone 12 Pro Max while these issues were already ongoing and almost sent it back thinking this model just had massively horrible battery life. Then I found this thread. I don’t understand how you can mess up an app this much just by an update?

Listen to Spotify from 8:30am-4:30pm everyday at work, don’t touch my phone other than the occasional skipping a song and with how the app is at the moment there’s no way my phone can get close to lasting that whole time without plugging in the charger, when before this spotify update - while I was also on a 4 year old samsung, I’d have at least 40% by the end.

Please fix this 😞

Issue:

Since Monday, Spotify is draining my iPhone battery (using at least 50%).  Phone gets warm while using the app and battery is gone in a very short amount of time.  I have deleted the app, restarted my phone, even re-set my phone (which is a pain).  I spent 45 minutes with an Apple tech and my phone is perfect.  This needs to be fixed!!

Similarly to what other users have reported, the battery in my 6 months old iPhone depletes extremely fast. The device is noticeably hot to the touch. The phone drops to 30% in less than 12 hours, despite 100% battery condition.

Upon checking the battery report in settings, 80% of the power is drained by the Spotify app.

I only noticed this issue after updating to iOS 15.

Tried reinstalling the app, disabling background updates and all the other things suggested in this thread but to no avail.

I seriously hope this gets resolved quickly because it makes my phone virtually unusable.

My Question or Issue

Losing 20-30% battery per hour when listening to Spotify. Started noticing this issue around a week ago, likely coinciding with the switch to iOS 14.8 but not absolutely certain. Like many others have this, this bug really makes Spotify almost unusable when out and about. Thanks
