[iOS] High battery drain with Spotify on iPhones with iOS versions 14.8 and 15.0

Hey folks,

Thanks for your reports about battery drainage while updating from iOS 14.8 to .15 on both firmware versions during the past days.

We’ve passed your info on to the relevant team and we can confirm they are currently looking into it.

If you’re experiencing this issue, make sure to click +VOTE and Subscribe to the thread to be notified of any developments.

Aside from trying restarting and/or a clean reinstall of the app, it'd be great if you'd give disabling Background App Refresh a shot: this could be found under Settings -> General -> Background App Refresh.

Thanks! We’ll keep you posted and let you know as soon as we have any updates on this.

Good news!

There’s a new version (8.6.64) of Spotify available in the App Store. The latest version includes fixes and improvements that should eliminate the stability and performance issues affecting a subset of iOS users.

If you have automatic updates switched on, you should have the newest version shortly.  If not, you’ll have to update the App manually. You can find step-by-step instructions for updating Spotify here.

My Question or Issue

When connected to my AirPods or earphones, Spotify will either crash and I will have to open the app again. Or the song will stop and will go back to the beginning. This happens after approximately a minute. At first it would only happen when the phone is locked but now happens when unlocked too. This also makes my phone heat up and lose battery like crazy.

I have tried disconnecting the WIFI, toggling background app refresh, did the clean reinstall twice, restarted my phone multiple times, offloaded the app and deleted the cache, basically tried every solution mentioned on this website and nothing works. It’s really frustrating. This has been happening for DAYS.

Hey @sleepyrena, welcome to the Community.

If you haven't done it yet, could you try a quick clean reinstall of the app. Just follow these steps.

If you're still having trouble, could you let me know the exact version of Spotify and the exact version of the operating system you're running? Also, if you could record this behavior would be great.

I'll see what I can suggest next!

Hi folks,

Thank you for keeping us in the loop.

@KnowQuestion It's great to know everything is working fine on your side. Remember to always keep your app updated, so you don't miss any fixes or new features.

@JounPeikko Could you send us the URI link of the lofi playlist experiencing this issue? This way we can check it from our side.

We'll keep an eye out for your reply.

Hi,

I already mentioned that I tried the clean reinstall twice 🙂

I’m using iOS 14.8 and my Spotify version is 8.6.60.1313. It crashes mostly when locked and occasionally when unlocked so I can’t count on being able to record it crashing when it’s unlocked, it may take a while but I will try to record it.

Hey @sleepyrena,

Just wanted to make sure it was done right by following Spotify's official article, thank you though.

I have the same issue, I understand so whenever you can send that video it would be great. Will be helpful for investigating this issue further.

Keep me posted 🙂

I have the same issue, tried out to clear cache,
clean reinstall, logging out and in everywhere, but nothing works so far. The app keeps on crashing, no matter which title or which playlist being played, and the app doesn’t even survive one single song up to its end without crashing. It started after the latest update and with the new design. Basically: The app is useless right now.
Any other solutions?

(My device: iPhone 11, iOS 14.8).

My Question or Issue

Battery would drain within an hour if I let it run, but have not as to how hot it gets. I’ve soft reinstall, full wipe install, background turn off, all quality settings low and still it continues. It works fine offline if something is downloaded (tried after full wipe) while my battery is older and does not last what it use to no other app has this much draw on the battery maybe if I was steaming max res video but that’s comparable to audio?
