[iOS] High battery drain with Spotify on iPhones with iOS versions 14.8 and 15.0

Hey folks,

Thanks for your reports about battery drainage while updating from iOS 14.8 to .15 on both firmware versions during the past days.

We’ve passed your info on to the relevant team and we can confirm they are currently looking into it.

If you’re experiencing this issue, make sure to click +VOTE and Subscribe to the thread to be notified of any developments.

Aside from trying restarting and/or a clean reinstall of the app, it'd be great if you'd give disabling Background App Refresh a shot: this could be found under Settings -> General -> Background App Refresh.

Thanks! We’ll keep you posted and let you know as soon as we have any updates on this.

Good news!

There’s a new version (8.6.64) of Spotify available in the App Store. The latest version includes fixes and improvements that should eliminate the stability and performance issues affecting a subset of iOS users.

If you have automatic updates switched on, you should have the newest version shortly.  If not, you’ll have to update the App manually. You can find step-by-step instructions for updating Spotify here.

Hi @aceofspades001,

Thank you for sharing your post on this thread.

Since you already started with the basic troubleshooting, please make sure that your phone isn't running any battery optimization setting for Spotify.

Also, is this happening only when you're connected to the internet, or also when the app is offline playing downloaded music?

Keep us posted!

The spotify app keeps crashing whenever I leave the app or lock my phone. The song will continue to play for anywhere up to about one minute and then it will stop. The app preview on the lock screen goes away at this time. When I go back into the spotify app, the app appears to be restarting and the song is paused at the beginning. I have tried all troubleshooting fixes. I did a clean reinstall, per the instructions I have seen in other threads, I switched off battery optimization, I logged out and back in, and I have made sure all software and the app itself are running on the latest versions. I went through and deleted the cache as well as other apps on my phone that may have been taking up storage. I cannot continue to use the app in this state, and I am very upset with this experience. If I cannot fix this soon, I will stop using spotify.

Hi there @GrimWall,

Thank you for reaching out to the Community.

Can you confirm that you followed the steps that's provided in this article? There's some more steps to help thoroughly uninstall the app from your phone so if you haven't, we'd highly suggest it since the steps will make sure there's no old cache files causing this.

If that doesn't do the trick we can recommend that you check the phone's battery settings and make sure that Spotify is set as an exception if you're using the battery optimization option:

  1. Low Power Mode (Settings -> Battery -> Low Power Mode) needs to be off
  2. Background App Refresh (Settings -> General-> Background App Refresh needs to be ON for Spotify

If Background refresh is greyed out in the ON position, go To Settings - > General - > Background App Refresh - > Turn on the option for the system, and then you can turn on / off by app.

We'll keep an eye out  for your reply.

Take care!

This is happening to me as well, and I have tried all of the suggested fixes. Spotify needs to acknowledge that this is a bug, and do something about it. I am not paying $10 a month to destroy my iPhone battery.

My Question or Issue

For the last few days, Spotify is consistently eating at least 50% of my battery usage according to the settings on my phone. If I play anything from Spotify, my phone gets very hot and the battery drains. I have already contacted tech support, tried a clean reinstall and restarting my phone. This is obviously a bug and needs to be fixed. We are not paying $9.99 to have this app destroy our iPhone batteries. Please fix this issue or I will be leaving the platform.

The same thing is happening to me. My iPhone is running hot in a way that it never used to while using the app and I can watch my battery life go down drastically over significantly short periods of time (5% every 8 minutes or so?). This is making using this app incredibly frustrating and it just defeats the purpose of having music and podcasts on hand when I'm out. Why should I risk running my battery all the way down just for Spotify? Can you address and fix this please?

I am having a HUGE BATTERY DRAIN the last 2-3 days and the iPhone becomes really hot.
Am loosing 20% of battery in less than 30 minutes with spotify when before I was loosing less than 5%
The app also crashes 3-4 times a day hen it never happens before.

PLEASE FIX THE ISSUE.

It’s not only playlists! It happens with “liked songs” too
