[iOS] High battery drain with Spotify on iPhones with iOS versions 14.8 and 15.0

Hey folks,

Thanks for your reports about battery drainage while updating from iOS 14.8 to .15 on both firmware versions during the past days.

We’ve passed your info on to the relevant team and we can confirm they are currently looking into it.

If you’re experiencing this issue, make sure to click +VOTE and Subscribe to the thread to be notified of any developments.

Aside from trying restarting and/or a clean reinstall of the app, it'd be great if you'd give disabling Background App Refresh a shot: this could be found under Settings -> General -> Background App Refresh.

Thanks! We’ll keep you posted and let you know as soon as we have any updates on this.

Good news!

There’s a new version (8.6.64) of Spotify available in the App Store. The latest version includes fixes and improvements that should eliminate the stability and performance issues affecting a subset of iOS users.

If you have automatic updates switched on, you should have the newest version shortly.  If not, you’ll have to update the App manually. You can find step-by-step instructions for updating Spotify here.

Hi folks,

Thanks for the posts.

For anyone still experiencing the issue, can you try running a clean reinstall of the app, as described in this Guide.

If the issue continues after that , please let us know:

  • Your phone model, OS version
  • Exact Spotify version

Cheers.

Alex

Hi folks,

Thanks for the posts.

The right teams are working on this issue currently. Could you try disabling the Background App Refresh for now? This could be found under Settings -> General -> Background App Refresh.

Let us know if that helps.

I am using iPhone 11 Pro and have been having issues since Sunday initially with iOS 14 and now with iOS 15.

I have uninstalled and reinstalled Spotify three times and have configured Background app refresh as suggested.

Spotify continues to use more than 50% of the battery in the background and when I stream podcasts or music the battery becomes very hot and the battery drops alarmingly quickly.

I have therefore had to uninstall the app until this is fixed and will be cancelling my premium account.

Quick update from me: I just popped out to the supermarket for 30mins, listening to podcasts all the while. Screen was mostly off and battery ran down from 60% to 45% over that time with Spotify accounting for 80% of so of that usage, according to my phone. Never use to be that aggressive so something's clearly up.

My Question or Issue

I have never had issues with the battery however on Monday 09/20/21 I noticed my phone starting to get quite hot and the battery was draining 10% every 20 minutes while using Spotify. I performed a clean reinstall which helped a tiny bit but the phone still gets hot fast and the battery drains quickly. It seems like this is a widespread issue so I hope Spotify is able to figure out a fix pretty quick. I know it can be frustrating when the hardware requirements of Apple are what they are. Wouldn't be surprised Apple was doing this on purpose to get iPhone users upset with Spotify and switch to Apple Music. I really hope this is not the case. Best wishes to Spotify.

Ridiculous.  I’m ready to dump Spotify.  I have to replace a relatively new battery because of this issue.

And still no fix, they really think we are a joke 😄  Bye spotify and i recommend all of you to do the same...

Same here, in 15 mins of listening to music on Spotify the battery dropped 10% and got quite hot.
