[iOS] Spotify lags/crashes when scrolling through larger playlists

Hello all, I've been suffering a new major issue ever since the latest Spotify update on iOS. I download and store all of my music, and play and add them onto a large playlist with hundreds of songs. I never have had an issue with this setup beforehand. Now, if I attempt to scroll past these songs and go near the bottom of it, the app will lag, freeze up, and even crash on occasion, practically making the app unusable. I am on an iPhone 11 Pro Max, and am on the latest iOS version. I have already attempted to reinstall the app, but upon doing so, it did not alleviate the issue. Is this an issue on my end or is this an unintended performance issue by the development team?

Testing further, interestingly enough this issue does not apply to my Liked Songs. This does not satisfy my issue as I strongly prefer to use the playlist feature so that I may share it with my friends.

I have the exact same problem with my iPhone 12 pro max running iOS 14.2.1.

when i scroll through my playlist with 3k songs in it the app lags pretty hard and even freezes sometimes. The phone is fresh out of the box and multiple reboots and clean reinstalls didnt help.

I can confirm this. Liked Songs do not lag. The other lists are so choppy they can’t be scrolled through.

Adding to that, I’ve also followed all the available guides for clearing cache, uninstalling, hard/fresh/clean install, password change, logging out everywhere, updating iOS (it’s the latest), nothing works. This has to be a bug of some kind. Would be glad if we could get some acknowledgement on this and a fix.

Did another test on my iPad, same issue. I would love some kind of acknowledgement because it seems I’m also not alone in this issue, because it’s making me frustrated with Spotify as a whole.

First up, we suggest keeping the app updated to its latest version to ensure optimal performance. It's well worth running a clean reinstall by following these steps. This one is more thorough than the usual one.

@DSFive, we suggest that you try to log out and then log back in to see if this does the trick. If the issue persists, could you try logging in with your account using a friend's phone? Let us know how it goes.

@maxorzoom3, could you let us know if it happens over both WiFi and 3/4G, or only on one connection type? Additionally, we recommend trying it with Offline Mode to see if the issue persists.

@Yuuna, could you check if the same issue occurs when you're using Spotify on other devices? Sending us the exact make/model and operating system of your device would also come in handy.

Hi Peter,

I’ve used the link you provided with the install but the problem persists. I’ve also repeated the install on my other device: iPhone 6 and IPad 5th Gen (2017) op 14.2. All drivers are up to date and no other app is causing problems. As stated before, the Liked Songs playlist have zero issues, but all other lists do that have more than 100 songs or so. There’s also no difference between WiFi and 4g. As for trying to listen in Offline Mode - my primary playlist have 3k songs and I don’t use that feature because it chokes my overall space way too much. Aka, I listen online. Thus I’m not suitable to test that particular feature.

Hey Peter,

I appreciate the advice, but it did not resolve the issue. And as I’ve already stated, I’ve tried on my other iOS device, that being my iPad, and the issue persists. It’s set up Spotify in the same way, with all of my songs being downloaded and me playing from my personal public playlist.

Exact same issue for me. Iphone 11 and the 7000 song playlist cannot be scrolled through. Happened with the lastest update.

In order to look into this, we'd really appreciate the following details via a comment in this thread:

• The device(s) this is happening on
• The exact operating system version of the affected device(s)
• The exact version of the app you're on 
• Does this happen on your Liked Songs playlist, or just playlists with lots of tracks?
• Does a clean reinstall with the steps here help?
• Are you able to reproduce this with another device or account, or in playlists with less tracks?
• The troubleshooting steps you've tried (eg. changing WiFi/3G/4G networks, restarting your device, setting the app Offline, disabled any battery saving or cache clearing app restrictions for Spotify etc)
• Any screenshots or screen recording of what's happening would be very helpful - just make sure that there's no private/sensitive info displayed.
