[iOS] Tracks sync very slowly

Thread: 1513

Status: Unresolved

Description

Syncing tracks for offline use, on iPhone is extremely slow.

Additional information

From original topic:

"The mobile Spotify app is extremely slow to sync songs and usually stops after 20-25 songs. This has been happening for weeks if not months.

I have a blazing fast cable connection: 100Mb download speed + backup 8Mb download DSL. I've tried on these 2 connections + a 20Mb DSL connection at work and I have the same issue. Wifi signal is 5/5 on both iPhones and bandwidth tests are good.
Friends of mine living where I live (Strasbourg, France) don't seem to have the same problem. I can only think that it might be related to my account."

Please provide this additional info when you reply:

  • Which device(s) are you using? Please be specific, i.e. iPhone 4S, iPad 3 WiFi only, iPad 4 3G
  • What version is your iOS? I.e. 5.1,6.0.1,etc.
  • What quality are you syncing?
  • On which device(s) is syncing slow?
  • On which device(s) is syncing fast (or "regular" speed)?
  • If your tracks are syncing slowly, what's your average sync speed?
  • How many tracks, approximately, are you trying to sync?
  • Are you syncing over WiFi or 3G?
  • Do you know and can you confirm how fast your down- and upload speeds are on your WiFi network?
  • (Optional, for privacy reasons) In which country are you located?
  • Are you syncing local files or Spotify tracks?
  • If you are trying to sync local files, could you try only syncing Spotify tracks. Is this slow?
  • Please provide a couple of examples of playlists or tracks that are slow to sync.
  • On the "slow" device, did you:
reset the cache of your Safari app?
un- and reinstall the Spotify app?

  • iPhone 4S
  • iOS 7.0.4
  • Extreme quality
  • Slow on iPhone 4S
  • Fast on Nexus 5 (Android)
  • Can't tell of average sync speed, but it's extremely slow to non-existent.
  • Syncing about  20 tracks
  • Over WiFi
  • Download 24Mbit Upload 5Mbit on my cable
  • Located in USA
  • Syncing spotify tracks
  • All tracks/playlists are slow to sync.

I also find that it can take a minute or so just to download latest playlist contents (playlist show "Loading..." for a long time. This is on WiFi).

I also wish Spotify wouldn't keep pausing playlist downloading as combined with the super slow download makes it almost impossible to download offline playlists.

Have you tried what rooje mentioned before? E.g. turn off wifi syncing in iTunes. If anything, just to test if that speeds it up.

Turning off WiFi wouldn't work for me as I'm on Sprint. Being on Sprint means I can barely get any data at all.

Hi Pro510usa,

Do the following:

under iTunes on your Mac or PC go to: iPhone>Summary, switch off "Sync with this iPhone over Wi-Fi".

I've done this and syncing in Spotify works fine for me for about 2 months (and I sync new albums on daily basis).

Let me know if you can find it, otherwise I can make some screenshots (I'm a mac user, so I can only make screenshots with iTunes on Mac OS).

Good Luck!

My sync works over 2G/3G for my iphone 4s, running ios 7 and over WIFI, BUT ONLY when I switch my Wifi 802.11 to B mode ONLY.

Good luck to the rest of you.

iPhone 5s

  • What version is your iOS? I.e. 5.1,6.0.1,etc.

iOS 7.1.2

  • What quality are you syncing?

Tried normal, high, extreme

  • On which device(s) is syncing slow?

Syncs slowly (not at all?) on iPhone, and slowly on Macbook (although it started fast and then dropped to 20kb/s or less).

  • On which device(s) is syncing fast (or "regular" speed)?

Works fine on PC. Worked fine on Android device I had until a few days ago - Galaxy Nexus

  • If your tracks are syncing slowly, what's your average sync speed?

Syncs at < 2 KB/s if it is syncing at all. Leaving it go for 8 hours it gets 10-300 done. I have never monitored it at more than 2-3 kb/s. I'm monitoring using tools on my router (I'm a software engineer and am very comfortable with computers, networks, etc.)

  • How many tracks, approximately, are you trying to sync?

I've tried playlists with 60 tracks up to around 1400 tracks with the same result.

  • Are you syncing over WiFi or 3G?

Syncing over WiFi is what is slow. Syncing over 4G LTE is as fast as I would expect it to be (2-3 mbyte/s).

  • Do you know and can you confirm how fast your down- and upload speeds are on your WiFi network?

WiFi can do 2mbyte/s and does when using my android device on the EXACT same network with no additional network-related settings.

  • (Optional, for privacy reasons) In which country are you located?

US

  • Are you syncing local files or Spotify tracks?

No

  • Please provide a couple of examples of playlists or tracks that are slow to sync.

All of mine are slow, this is not related to specific sets of files.

  • On the "slow" device, did you:
reset the cache of your Safari app? - yes
  • un- and reinstall the Spotify app? - yes

My router does not support B-only mode, so I cannot test this fix. I have tried DMZing my iPhone, enabling  / disabling UPnP, switching to G from N mode, tried 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz bands, adjusted iTunes WiFi sync settings, tried with and with-out the Spotify app running on my Macbook. Tried with and with-out the iPhone plugged into a power source (laptop).

Macbook has a similar behavior, although it got a few more songs to start with and then slowed down drastically. I have no firewall or network filtering on my Macbook and have tried DMZing it as well to eliminate port forwarding issues.

Here is a snippet of open connections while spotify is attempting to sync on my macbook (lsof -i -n | grep -i spotify)

It reaches a steady-state speed of about 27kb/s, very consistent and very slow. When streaming the same songs it is attempting to sync, I see speeds of 500-800 kb/s every time.

Here is one more snippted after stopping / starting syncing again (with streaming in between, but not during):

The bolded connection seems like the one used for downloading. I have very high latency to this IP, which is strange since it's Akamai and should be very nearby:

PING 23.15.9.89 (23.15.9.89): 56 data bytes

Here's a traceroute to it, showing very high latency as soon as I hit a nearby comcast node. Perhaps comcast is putting some restrictions on Spotify, Akamai, or this sort of traffic?

Grabbing the IP that my PC's spotify picked to download from, it seems to have much better latency:

PING 23.3.108.196 (23.3.108.196): 56 data bytes
64 bytes from 23.3.108.196: icmp_seq=0 ttl=58 time=86.748 ms

64 bytes from 23.3.108.196: icmp_seq=6 ttl=58 time=79.487 ms

Both are nearby akamai nodes, so no idea why there is a differency. Both my PC and Macbook are on the same network. Restarting downloads a few times on PC led to slower speeds so maybe it was a fluke, but on average it seems that my PC gets directed to better CDN nodes than my Macbook.

I'd be curious if other users with these issues are also seeing poor network performance reaching your CDN.

Hillarious that I am still getting responses on this.

I cancelled spotify for Google Play All Access when it came out.

Disconnecting.

I got the same issue with Android LG G3. 191 songs have been synced since this morning with a 1.2Mo/s wi-fi connection.
