I cannot play any songs on the player. It was working for a while, then an update (I suppose) happened.
Tried to reinstall and remove cache. Nothing.
Web player works fine.
Tried other sound sources and they all work fine.
Is this a subtle hint to move to competitors because this seems to be a recurring issue?

Interestingly the app works now again. No idea what has changed.

Can you try restarting your app and check if your app version its updated?
Also, can you go to Help > About and send us a screenshot of the info on this screen?

Let us know if it happens when switching audio output e.g. headphones to speakers. Also is this happening with local files or just any song on Spotify?
