Can't find friends, or anyone!

Hey, all, I am a premium family user, just signing in for the first time but have had family Spotify for a while. I am failing miserably in my quest to find anybody using the Find Friend feature. I have tried using search for my family members using spotify:user:USERNAME method, I have even searched for "Elvis" like in the tutorial example, and "smith" and "jason" and other random names and the only result I ever get is "There are no more friends to show at this time."  I have not enabled Facebook (don't really want to yet), but I should be able to find with name username, or artists, right? I feel like maybe I have been blocked or haven't yet switched on some feature. Under settings, the option to "Share my account activity and what I am listening to on Spotify" option is grayed out, I can't check it (see attachment).  This is driving me nuts, want to share a playlist or two.
