Is Spotify really dropping Squeezebox support?

I just had a message flash up from the Spotify plugin on iPeng to checkout an important message at http://mysqueezebox.com/byeByeSpotify which redirects to https://support.spotify.com/us/listen_everywhere/on_speaker/why-cant-i-use-the-spotify-app-on-my-spe... telling me that Spotify support on Squeezebox will cease by July 20th. But elsewhere Spotify is promoting to listen to Spotify on Logitech Squeezebox and no mention that it's only for the next 7 days.

Which is it Spotify? time to return to listening to my ripped CD collection?

Thanks I will try to run a squeezbox server and see if it fixes the issue after July 20 but I still belibe it's a **bleep**ty move by spotify. We bought a second premium account so my kids could listen to their music on a dedicated box, my son loves it and now al the sudden he will not be able too. I guess i will just stop pying my subscription with a few days notice.

Looks like spotify is loosing one more premium subscription over this.....

2: This one bothers me the most (maybe i'm confguring something wrong): The Spotty plugin allows you to play via the squeezebox from your phone. This is fundamentally different. In the old system my kids could search and play music using only the Hardware interface of the squeezebox (dial button & display). Now they would need an extra phone (and guess what, the are not gonne use mine and I wil not give my 6 year old a personal cellphone) to pick the music and stream it to the box.

I have Spotty running on my own server and you can use your Squeezebox's controls to operate it the same way as the old 'app'. No phone or web-interface is needed for operation. Though setting it up through it's web interface is convenient and needed. The 'app' replaces the old 'app' if that makes any sense to you.

True, and I certainly applaud the external community for keeping it going.  However, even as a reasonably computer-savvy person, I looked at that thread, look at my Synology NAS, then look at the support for Deezer and simply take the easy way out.  See you later, Spotify.  Music streaming services are interchangeable.  This seems to be  something Spotify doesn't realise.  If Spotify drops support of my Squeezebox devices, then I prefer to subscribe to Deezer than jump through hoops to get Spotty working on my NAS.  No hard feelings, but my 20 bucks a month goes elsewhere now.  They won't miss me, I won't miss them.

Not sure why everyone is trying so hard to get spotify to play on their squeezebox. I did have spotify premium but after their drop of support for st I simply cancelled my subscription and subscribed to deezer who still supports st. I am very happy with deezer and see no difference except maybe their streaming is consistently of a higher quality. Forget spotify and subscribe to deezer.

Hmm... Thanks for this tip!

I've unsubscribed my parent's Spotify account and gave them Deezer Premium. And it indeed works like a charm! The interface (on the players) also runs a lot quicker than Spotify's plugin ever did. Pricing is the same as Spotify and I was surprised to see Deezer has a larger library than Spotify has. Audio quality is the same. So switching to Deezer seems to be a very viable option. Just install the Deezer plugin through www.mysqueezebox.com and you are set.

Ive used spotify premium on squeezebox for a long time now but can no longer support a service that does not support me. I have switched to deezer and after getting use to it I am very happy with deezer. I even think that there streaming quality is consistently better than spotify so I dont think I would ever go back to spotify even if they change their mind. Deezer rules.

What a nasty surprise - coming back from holidays. What a horrible trick you are playing on squeezebox owners, spotify!

Hello everyone. As we look to improve the overall Spotify experience, we can confirm we are removing the app's integration from Squeezebox. There's more info here.

A very bad decision.

Thank you for clarifying that. You may note that this is the same link as the original post in this thread.

Can you advise how exactly the Spotify experience is being improved for those users who were disappointed to receive one week's notice of withdrawal of support? Disenfranchising your customers doesn't seem to be a great way of improving experience.

Thre is an easy workaround available from a squeezebox developer, 3rd part app called spotty - works great

On a brand new Raspberry Pi 3 I installed Raspbian Jessie Lite (downloaded from https://www.raspberrypi.org/downloads/raspbian/) and then installed the following packages as user root (or use sudo if you prefer):

apt-get install -y libsox-fmt-all libflac-dev libfaad2 libmad0
(downloaded LMS 7.9 deb package from http://downloads.slimdevices.com/nightly/?ver=7.9)
dpkg -i logitechmediaserver_all.deb
chown -R squeezeboxserver:nogroup /usr/share/squeezeboxserver/

Then I just had to install one Perl library (IO-Socket-SSL) that wasn't there by default, to make Spotty happy:
apt-get install libio-socket-ssl-perl
(it installs a couple of dependencies, libio-socket-ssl-perl and libnet-libidn-perl )

And that was it - LMS and Spotty all works wonderfully.

Improve, improve??? I don't know whether to laugh or cry. Cry and switch to Deezer or Tidal .

Why can't Spotify have backward compability for the benefit of the customers?

If you can't use serveral device it will be a lot of customers that talk about Spotify in a not so nice manner. Why pay for Spotify Premium?

Spotify will loose good will and money

Hi.. after messing about trying to run Spotify plug in on SBS I gave up.. all looked good but wouldn't play.. message popped up saying 'other device has restarted'.. so sadly I've cancelled my family subscription and loaded Deezer... it seems to work fine but I'll miss my playlists and sharing those of friends..

I would expect articles like the one you linked to, to be updated or removed. Support is going away. I was also sent an offer to but a Fon Gramofon device with a discount. That or Chromecast audio seems to be the best options for replacing the Squeezebox. Sorry to see support drop as the Squeezebox excellent. With Gramofon or Chromecat audio I need to fiddle with my phone or tablet every time I need to change tunes etc. with the SB this was much simpler and you can also add your favourite radio apps etc. Now with the phone you must switch between apps for radio, spotify etc.
*Edit* To all of you whining about Spotify dropping the support. Logitech discontinued the SqueezeBox in 2012, 5 years ago. The Spotify app has been working ever since on the SqueezeBox but as Spotify has built a new API (maybe done a bad job communicating about it) it was only a matter of time before the SB would stop working. Bottom line is, the device is not supported by its manufacturer, they (Logitech) could build a new app but that's highluy unlikely since the device is discontinued. If you don't mind using a media server (and don't mind spending a lot if time) you can install Spotty.

Don´t they really know the capabilities of Squeezeboxes and what they are? I love to SEE what I am currently hearing. On a small device showing whats currently playing. With nice Album Art.

With Apple Airplay: not possible (instead of turning on my TV all the time when I listen to music). With Chromecast: not possible (same issue). With Laptops: Ehem, I wanna listen to music!! With Desktop Devices (Ehem, well, I don´t like to have my office in my living room). And all these expensive Superboxes: No way.

This is so ironic, Spotify have just advised me that I have a new community rank, "Music Fan", as a a result of this post and the replies. Yes, I like to think I am. However, clearly no one on Spotify staff reads these posts. 2 days on and 5 days left to no Squeezebox support and Spotify are still advertising the use of Squeezebox with Spotify.

Let's see if they're still advertising after July 20th.

I wonder how many people are going to have a nasty surprise on July 20th.

July 21st and Spotify's website reliably informs me that I can use my Logitech Squeezebox a day after they stopped supporting it.

Unconscious or conscious incompetence?

My Squeezebox has since yesterday no longer access to Spotify, so sadly the
support stopped as announced.

Update...I now have the rank of Music Lover. Great, but Spotify want to turn off my ability to listen to the Music I Love.
