Loud volume ads

Loud volume ads

I'd like to report seeing this issue in a number of ads in the Mexico City market. The ad volume is disproportionately higher in comparison with the volume of any music I might have been listening to. The main culprits in this case are a couple of ads by Citibanamex promoting two forthcoming shows in the city (Florence + the Machine and Billy Idol). I'm attaching screenshots below. Although right now I'm only reporting two ads, I've noticed that most of the ads produced by Citibanamex follow this trend of being too loud.

What are Spotify's guidelines for ad volume for those who want their ads to go up on the platform and how are they enforced? Sometimes it feels like companies compress their ads beyond reasonable limits in order for them to be noticed above the music and other ads, but it gets to the point where it causes physical discomfort to listen to them, and it feels rather irresponsible from both sides. I would hope for stricter regulations regarding ad submission and better quality control and content review for ads hoping to be broadcasted. Hopefully the ad can be modified or removed and stiuations like these can be prevented before the ads go live.

Hey folks,

Thanks for reporting these ads here!

Could you make sure to provide us with the following details (feel free to use this as a template):

  • Country:
  • Device the ad appeared on:
  • Operating system:
  • Exact Spotify app version:

  • Is it a visual or audio ad?

  • Name of ad:

  • Rough time/date you heard the advert:

  • Reason for complaint:

Once we have that, we'll make sure to pass it on to the right team.

Thanks!

Well, I am not going to pay for a service, that is unable to implement reasonable loundness matching and pays pennies to the artists.

Unwilling is the correct term here.

But you are right, why pay to a company which is unable/unwilling to be fair to our ears.

I would like to suggest that all ads should be a couple of decibels lower then any previous track.

Sleep time playlists shouldn’t be suddenly interrupted by obnoxious ads playing at the same loudness.

A amazing example of this is TubiTV all ads are softer then the actual programs volume.
Bad example is Crackle they always play ads louder then video program. You can learn a lot from TubiTV and how they handle ads.

Giffgaff have this dame ad on that constantly plays and starts with this phone tone that makes my eardrums feel like they’ve exploded and also makes me want to throw up, for some reason I can’t make a complaint to Spotify about this so I’m venting my frustration here, not like it will change anything but oh well. This isn’t the first time Spotify has had ads like this and I doubt that will change, so in the meantime I’ll just have to find somewhere else to listen to music because I’m not going to give into this psychological warfare and pay money to not feel physically pain when I want to listen to some music.

Thanks for reporting this to us @TazDevil!

We'll make sure to pass it on, we'll just need to know your Spotify version and the OS version of your iPad.

We'll be on the lookout for your update!

Why do we have to report every individual ad?!
CLEARLY ITS EVERY AD THAT GETS PLAYED BY SPOTIFY!

The problem is, SPOTIFY DOES NOT WANT TO FIX IT!
They want you to pay for the services to disable the ads (and hence shutting you up about the volume)
This issue has been going on since the conception of this service. (what 2012?)
After many hours searching to resolve this, there is no current solution.
There was resolve a number of years ago, but they have since REMOVED the feature.

Nice way for a company to hog you into the paid subscription.
Just use other apps that don't artificially add volume to commercials.
Problem solved.

Is it a visual or audio ad? Audio

Name of ad: some store with shoes?

Rough time/date you heard the advert: 20:40

Reason for complaint: listening to soothing music when the ad blasted in my ears at what felt like 5x the volume of the music, but perhaps that's because the ad is peppy & excited while the music is low and mellow?

The normalize feature is on, and even with louder music, ads often seem at least 2x as loud as the music!

Edit: the ad was from DSW

Hilarious request for reports of offending ads when Spotify's own ads are guilty (and frequently encountered huh?).
Honestly, the lengthy history of this issue is testament to the underlying business model being played out - you want a solution? Buy Premium.

Spotify clearly don't want to solve this issue and it's going to require legislation or legal action before they take responsibility for our hearing.

@SuburbanWorrier
You are right.
As I stated several times already, Spotify can normalize all songs, but seem to have problems to normalize all ads, including their own. Maybe it is a strategie to push us towards the payed version. I can understand that.
But to be honest, to blow out my eardrums during this process is more than a-social.

  • Reason for complaint: Even your own ads are too loud, loud enough that they actually cause physical pain. Whats it going to take for you to actually do something about? Theres been non stop threads about this for the past 10 years and nothing has changed despite you marking all these threads as solved. I'm guessing the point is to annoy us to the point that we end up paying for premium but instead its done the opposite.

Re: Loud volume ads

Same here. The problem is biggest with classical music(high dynamic range). I have volume turned up very high for that and then ad blasts at 1xx dB constant loudness, it was very dangerous today, my ears still ring

I have to stop using Spotify for now for my own good.

Hi Nordomis,

I also stopped using spotify for the same reason.
It makes no sense, all music, seems to be normalised (they all have the same maximum volume) but ads can be as loud as the advertiser can get them, to the max. It"s more than stupid spotify let them.

Fortunately there are good alternatives and I will not come back till they "fixed" this.

Greetz,
Ben

So glad I'm not the only one with this specific commercial! It is so obnoxious!

How can we think Spotify is being serious about this

Listening to Slipknot, quite loud music.
And now my eardrums hurt because I had to listen to an ANWB commercial.

ANWB commercial.

Spotify really thinks their listeners are not worth to listen to.
