I am using the web player on Chrome, and when I try to put a space in the search terms it only toggles play/pause. I am unable to search for anything with more than one word...
Same, I am having this problem and it's driving me nuts, only happened sometime this day.

I had the same issue, but I managed to get rid of it.
Easiest fix - Ctrl + F5, hard-refresh of the webpage.
Try deleting your (Spotify) cookies and cache, and then restarting the browser.
Trying incognito might work as well.
I also tried restarting my browser without addons to see if any of my addons were the culprit. Search worked, so I restarted again to get addons enabled, and Spotify works just fine now.
