can't apply gift card to premium account

I have $40 in gift cards.  I already have a premium service paying thru paypal.  I get the error message telling me "premium gift card can't be used on premium account"  

I assume the cards are valid and active.

How can I apply this $40?

I think the gift cards cannot be redeemed unless you first cancel your PayPal premium subscription.

Usually you can redeem up to four $10 gift cards a month while you have a credit card subscription.

It might be that the system works differently when you are redeeming a gift cards with a PayPal subscription.

You can try canceling your subscription, and then try redeeming the gift cards. Any remaining premium time that you currently have will remain on your account. If it doesn't work, then you may have to wait until your current subscription ends after canceling, before redeeming the gift cards.
