My Question or Issue

Spotify on Xbox has recently broken. When you attempt to play an album the first / selected song will play, however upon the song's end it will change randomly to a song from a completely different artist or album and then continue on that path forever, serving you songs that are not part of that album at all. For example, if I play the first song on Mayhem (Disease) it'll play, but upon its end the playlist will direct me to a song from Ariana Grande etc.

Starting the playlist via the mobile app seems to fix this for the playlist, until you select another song via the Xbox app.

Hi everyone,

Great news - we've received confirmation from our tech folks that this should now be fixed in the latest version of the app! If you haven't already, try updating it and that should do the trick!

I'd also recommend turning on automatic updates so you never miss a thing.

Thanks again for helping us make Spotify better. Cheers 🤘

This is happening to me too, its very annoying

Hey there folks,

Thanks for getting in touch about this here in the Community.

Could you let us know if this started happening after a specific event such as an update? Also, does this happen with all albums or only with a specific one?

On another note, we recommend checking if the software of your Xbox has any pending updates.

To see if there’s an update available:

  1. Press the Xbox button to open the guide.
  2. Select Profile & system > Settings > System > Updates.
  3. If there are any updates, they’ll appear in the left menu. If not, you'll see "No console update available."

We'll be waiting for your replies.

Yes this happened very recently and seeming to update your Xbox doesnt really work.

Hey @Roseyy,

Thanks for joining the thread and for the additional info.

Folks, does this happen with albums only or with playlists as well? Can you send us a screenshot of the Now Playing View on mobile when an unrelated song is playing so we can check how it looks on your end?

On another note, can you try removing all third-party services on this page (no worries, you can re-add them later if needed) and check again if the behavior persists?

Cheers,

This happens with playlists as well. As far as I know it started this week recently as it was working fine earlier last week but I don't think it happened after anything specific like an update (or maybe, I remember Spotify updating sometime this week and that's when it might've started

Hey @Cephyrus,

Thank you for keeping in contact and for the info shared.

To continue investigating this issue, would you mind including the Spotify version you're currently running on your Xbox? You can check that by following these steps:

  1. Press the Xbox button to open the guide.
  2. Go to My games & apps and select See all.
  3. Highlight the Spotify app.
  4. Press the Menu button on your controller (the one with three horizontal lines).
  5. Select Manage game and add-ons. The app version number is usually displayed on this screen.

Also, and if possible; could any of you record a short video where we can take a better look? You can attach it to your next response by using the Insert Video option in the post editor. You can also upload it to YouTube or Google Drive and share the link with us (make sure the video has the permissions for anyone to see it).

We'll be on the lookout.

This issue started after the most recent update for me at least. It happens with playlists and albums. Version 2.48.0.70

The attached image is a screenshot of the queue after selecting the first song under Ice Nine Kills on my xbox. As you can see, it appears to just automatically smart shuffle songs instead of playing what we select on the xbox.

Hi @Thepropmaster,

Thanks for the reply and the info provided.

Since I see you're playing from Connect, could you let us know if the behaviour is the same both when playing from the Xbox itself and controlling playback from another device? And when you selected the song, did you do this from search, from the artist profile or from an album/playlist? Does any of this make a difference or are recommended songs always shuffled in?

Let us know how it goes.

I am having issues with xbox series S Spotify too. I am not able to play full playlists or albums as it just skips to other artists. My "recently played" is also showing incorrectly

Hi @SunCoral and everybody else,

Thanks for all the replies.

There seem to be several different issues being mentioned in this thread and we've observed that there have been quite a few issues with the Xbox app as of late. Not to worry, we're looking into it all and trying to get to the bottom of things. To that end though, we'll need to narrow down the different issues and handle each one separately.

First of all, there's a different thread here where the issue of playback getting stuck on one song and shuffle not working as expected as well. If that's what you're facing, please check out the other thread and post any relevant info you may have there. We're looking into things already and will keep you posted on updates if and when we have them.

If instead you're facing issues with how the library is displayed on the Xbox, check out and post your info in this thread instead.

If you have something else, so that we can investigate further, please send us the following:

  • What is the exact behaviour you're experiencing?
  • When did this start happening? What version of the app are you using?
  • What troubleshooting steps have you tried so far?
  • Does the same happen across different networks?
  • Does it happen when controlling playback via Connect or on the Xbox itself too?
  • Is all content affected or only specific kinds (music, podcasts, etc.)

We'll be keeping an eye out for your replies.

Cheers!

I started playing an artist on the xbox spotify app. Then I Immediately pulled up the queue on the mobile app to show what was going on. It does that s with artists, playlists, and albums on the xbox app only ever since the last update on the xbox version. This can be easily bypassed with the mobile app. However the music extension from the xbox quick menu is pretty much useless now unless you want spotify to play completely random songs after the first initial song you select.

Hey there @Thepropmaster,

Thanks for all the info shared.

We really appreciate the time you took previously to send us a screenshot. In this case, we'd need a video recording of the exact steps you took to replicate this behavior. You can attach the video to your next reply in mp4 format, or upload it to YouTube or Google Drive and make it public.

Note: Be aware this is a public space, so please don't share any personal info on the screenshot you'll send us.

This will help us a lot to continue narrowing down this behavior.

We'll be around!

Below is a link showing what I've explained already. As you can see, it doesn't matter if I start an artist, playlist, or album. If I start it with the Spotify Xbox app, it will play whatever it wants after the first onitial song choice instead of playing what I picked. I will reiterate the screen shot from two comments ago, was taken on my phone of the queue Immediately after starting an artist on the Spotify Xbox app. From the screenshot I took, it appears to just smart shuffle reccomended songs instead playing the artist, playlist, or album you choose after the first song is done/skipped. This didn't happen until the most recent update on the xbox app. The only workaround is using the phone or computer to control it wich makes the app nearly pointless on the xbox. Hopefully this is clear enough for ya'll and you can find the issue soon.

Hey everyone,

Thanks for all your reports on this! And kudos for including the video @Thepropmaster - it's much appreciated!

We've passed the details you've provided onto our tech teams so they can have a closer look as well. If we have any news to share, we'll keep you posted in this thread 🙂

Should you come across this thread in the near future and experiencing a similar issue, feel free to add your details too, so it can be forwarded to the right folks:

  • The model & software version of your Xbox.
  • Current Spotify version.
  • A video showing how things look from your end. Just make sure it doesn't include any personal info.

These details will help the teams with their investigation.

Cheers!

On top of that, the liked songs list is completely missing from the Xbox sub-menu.

This seems to have happened with the most recent update to Spotify on xbox. It seems to do it with pretty much all albums, playlists, and even the discography on an artist's homepage. It just won't play songs in order, songs will repeat, even if the repeat setting is at 🔁 and not 🔂, and if you have it set not to repeat, it will play a song completely unrelated to that album or playlist. Also, the 'liked songs' playlist is completely missing from the Xbox sub-menu.

So glad spotify is being so helpful about this issue, asking the same questions and providing absolutely zero fixes. I've unlinked my account, reinstalled the app, logged in again, and it's still randomized. It's as if I had smart shuffle permanently.

Spotify guys, can you simply rollback your recent Xbox app update as it was working fine before and you obviously have no idea what you're doing? It's been 3 weeks of this bs already and if it's not fixed by the end of the month, I'm going to cancel Spotify Premium as it's pretty much useless on Xbox now.
