Cannot play anything from web player

I opened the web player (first time since the switch to open.spotify), and I cannot play anything!

At the bottom of the page there is a green border that says you are listening on My MacBook Air - a device where I have the desktop app, but am not currently using (turned off). The devices list (connect to a device button next to volume) only shows Spotify Web Player, but I cannot play anything on the web player. I tried this both on chrome and firefox, no good. Having the web players open in both browsers, the devices list shows two web players - however it is as if I cannot choose either of them, keeping the invisible mac as the current device. 

This is a very frustrating web player bug. I tried different tips from other forum posts that had suggestions for chrome settings etc.. no good.
