In the new software update, when creating a new account, you can't choose your username, only your display name, whereas your username gets composed to that of a randomised set of letters and numbers. Since this makes it hard for other people to find you, given that you don't want to display your full name just your first name, I suggest Spotify bring back the ability to choose your own username, like you could in the version before this one. Plus, it feels very... impersonal when your username is "18uerkjhr34h23jh" rather than, like, "bojackfan420" or whatever floats your boat. You know?
Thanks for reaching out to the Community. Sorry for the delayed reply, we just came across this thread.
As you mentioned, since the removal of the ability to choose a username when creating a new account, you can set the display name that you want, which is the one publicly shown on your Spotify profile and the one with which other users can find you in the app. This works exactly as an username would, and remember that you can edit your display name every time you want.
As a heads-up, after creating a new account, it can take several weeks for the info to be synced and the account to be found in the app with the display name. No worries though, remember that you can directly share your profile with these steps.
You can find more info about the username and display name in this article.
Hope this clears things up. If you need a hand with anything else, the Community is here for you.
