Does the web player embed really require people to have the spotify app?

I used the "Copy Embed Code" on a playist I made in the OSX app.  I pasted it into my web page editor and when the page is displayed I get a nice iframe spotify player.  So far so good.

Clicking the play button, starts the play progress bar but no audio comes out.  The browser was blocking a popup so I "allowed" it.  Now when I click play the browser asks if I want to allow launching an external protocol, I say yes and remember in future.  This brings my spotify app to the front but does not change the selected track or play anything.

So that is a bit rubbish isn't it.  I presume this means that the embed requires site visitors to be spotify memembers and have the app on the device they are browsing from.  And even if they do it still doesn't work.

When you search the FAQs or knowledgebase there are no results for "Embed".  It's like it's a forgotten feature.

Is there any documentation on how the embed is supposed to work?
