Find out whether Spotify is installed using JavaScript

Hi all!

I'm not exactly submitting a new Idea to implement, but asking for help. I'm posting this here because this doesn't quite fit into any other area, too.

I'd like to show some Spotify stuff on my website, such as a link to my profile and my favorite playlists.

I'd like these links to open in the Spotify client if it is installed, but if it is not, they should point to the open.spotify.com server.

Also, I'd like to put some play buttons that launch a track if clicked and which are invisible or grayed out if Spotify is not installed.

Is it possible to check whethere Spotify is installed using JavaScript or something, so I can change the behavior of these links accordingly?
