For the last few days I can't play anything on my watch (in standalone mode). I always get the "can't play track when on call" error, even with the watch in plane mode. I just cleared the cache and re-installed spotify on both devices, no change, I am getting this same error again.

Can you confirm if you followed these steps when you reinstalled your phone?
If that didn't do the trick and you have an SD card we suggest that you uninstall the app > turn off your phone > take out your SD card > turn on the phone again (without the SD card) > reinstall the app since the card can be corrupted.
It's also good to make sure that you have the latest OS version on your watch and phone.
