Shuffle is set as default for every artist

Shuffle is set as default for every artist

Everytime I go to an artist and click one of their songs it defaults to having shuffle turned on. This happens if I click the big green play button as well as when I just click on an individual song (e.g. clicking on the first song under 'popular')

I have noticed that if I click the shuffle icon on the playback UI to turn shuffle off, it will remember for that artist. So if I come back to that artist later it will be normal, but every new artist I visit I have to manually turn shuffle off. This has been happening on both the mobile and desktop app.

Hi @andrewwhited!

Yep, the shuffle badge next to the big green play was recently introduced and by default it's activated on every new artist page you open, so this is expected behavior. If you deactivate it on a certain artist, the app will remember, like you pointed out, but otherwise all artists whom you haven't manually deactivated the shuffle badge for will have it toggled on. This is not the case for albums though - there the shuffle badge is deactivated by default instead.

Hope this clears things up. Cheers!

Thanks for the response. I understand that that is the expected behavior if I click the green button with the shuffle badge, but is it also expected when I just click an individual song directly on the artist page? I would just like to play the artist’s popular songs in order, but it still shuffles.

Hey @andrewwhited,

Thanks for your reply.

If you want to hear the songs under the Popular category for a given artists in the order of their listing, then you should click on the small 'Play' icon in front of the very first song in the list.

In case you're unable to achieve this, then please return with a short video recording of the situation, so we can take a closer look and give you a better advice.

Hope this helps. Let us know how you get on.

That’s what I’m doing (and clicking the song title when on mobile) but it is still shuffling

Hey @andrewwhited

Thanks for your reply.

In order to play the Popular songs in order in the mobile app, you need to deactivate the Shuffle feature first, since it's on by default on the Artist page.

If you don't deactivate it first, even if you click directly on the song, it'll play in Shuffle. In case it's not how it works on your end, would you mind sending us the screen recording @Kiril requested previously? We'll take a closer look.

Keep us posted.

Thanks for the response
So it’s not a bug but a feature..
Is there a way to switch it off for every artist?

I’m not sure why I need two ways to play shuffled (big green button and clicking a track directly) but not a default way to just play the list of popular songs shown in order.

If I’m coming to an artist page for the first time and want to get a sense of what they sound like, I want to hear their popular songs, not a random selection of their entire discography. How is that not the main use case for almost every persona?

Hey @andrewwhited

Thanks for getting back to us.

Currently, it's not possible to switch this option off for every artist.

Why is Spotify so obsessed with shuffle?  It took years of complaints and Adele stepping in to get rid of the shuffle play button. Now you have to force shuffle by default on popular songs.   What is the logic of this?

Well and arguably the most popular song list is already a shuffle in its own way so why FORCE it? It's driving me insane and ruining my experience. It's the first time I've ever considered leaving spotify.

This straight up the stupidest feature. If I am going for a run I don't want to have to stop, turn off shuffle, then continue if I just want to hear the popular songs of an artist. It's irritating that it is being toted as an improvement or something that is at all useful, with no option to turn it off globally.

Yep this is legit the most infuriating change Spotify has made since I’ve been a member.

There should be a way to toggle shuffle off for all artists and play modes. As a premium member I am supposed to be able to play what I want when I want it, not be sent to random songs all the time.

This is nothing more than a very surreptitious and hyper-controlling way of getting customers to listen to songs that don’t exist in the first 10 songs of their playlist (the most commonly heard songs).
There will be artists out there not believing that Spotify represents value for money.
But rather than it be our choice how many times we listen to these tracks….Spotify is now deliberately making us listen to less heard tracks.
It’s fine if it is optional.
It’s hyper-controlling and surreptitious without our consent, as loyal paying customers.

Spotify - STOP IT.

Give us the option to turn-off all shuffles.

Failure to do so looks very, very bad and manipulative to your customers.
They’ll only go elsewhere if you doesn’t represent and respect their values.
