Spotify via cars bluetooth not connecting.

I recently bought a new car, with its own Bluetooth built in. (My old one didn't and I used to use a FM transmitter) which would work fine. 

However, with my new car there are no issues pairing my iPhone with it's Bluetooth but when it comes to playing music from Spotify the sound only comes from my iPhone speakers and not the car despite the phone being connected. The car displays the songs, I can control the playback via the cars controls (play, pause, skip songs etc) but for some reason spotify isn't picking my car up. When I look in the device menu it's only showing as playing from iPhone. It does connect eventually and the sound will play from the car but it can take a while where it's usually instant. Anyone else had this issue? Hopefully there's a solution.
