[Unspecified] Offline on mobile when travelling

I have a Spotify Premium account and have synched all my playlists so as to be available in offline mode.  However when travelling last week and attempting to access my account when in flight mode on the plane I found my login was not recognised.  My question is, do you have to have a phone signal in order to be able to use offline mode ?  If so this renders the facility a little pointless for me as the main reason I subscribed was to have a better selection of music when I travel and this always involves flights.
