Any garage rock lovers out here?

Hi everybody,

I've always been a fan of rock music, especially garage rock. I love that it sounds raw and young, if that makes sense. So lately I've been working on a playlist that contains a lot of energetic garage rock songs.

spotify:user:dideke_prins:playlist:4q8GLMM9IMyRSItYq6wMjP

It would be nice to hear if you know any songs that can't be missing in the playlist!

If you like the playlist, be sure to give it a follow and im looking forward to hear from you guys!

I've been a big fan of The Orwells for a number of years now. Who Needs You is probably their most popular track and would fit in well on your playlist!

This isn't really what I would consider to be "Garage Rock". Garage has its roots in the Proto-Punk Psychedelic music of the 60s. Check out the compilations Back From the Grave.

Imagine the song "Louie Louie" as a gigantic boulder that's dropped in the ocean, every ripple from that would become a new Garage band. Early Garage was intensely scene-oriented, every band didn't have to sound like three cavemen plodding in a garage but many did.

The "Back fromo the Grave" compilations would be a great starting point. Here's one compiled by Aquarium Drunkard.

Garage (Not to be confused with UK Garage which is an entirely different beast) has continued to exist over the years with a huge resurgence in the late 90s, early 00s. Many bands such as Reigning Sound, The Oblivians, The Reatards, Jay Reatard, The Dirtbombs, The Gories, Japan's Guitar Wolf, this list just goes on and on... carried the torch into the modern era.

Here's another example including a band very inspired by Garage of the 60s, The Ramones.

If you enjoy Nirvana, Spotify recently added The Wipers catalog. You definitely need to check them out. The first three records are crucial: Is This Real?, Youth of America, and Over the Edge.

And here's a playlist with Garage tunes spanning from the 60s to today.  You may like King Tuff, Thee Oh Sees, New Bomb Turks, The Thermals.

I hope these playlists are helpful, sorry, this is just a humongous genre considering all it spawned.

Edit: Sorry, I'm not sure how to embed those playlists.

@brentmini great reply, well researched, wonderful to see genre expertise and i absolutely agree. garage is somewhat like indie, in that it has come to represent a far wider variety of music than it used to (not all of it true to the originals) ^_^

for future reference, you embed links by copying the Spotify URL, and pasting it in the clip link while posting:

One of my favorite recent finds is Residual Kid out of TX. Straight grunge/garage from some pretty young dudes. Scentless Princess, their lead track ,is one of my favorites. The whole 4 song EP is awesome.
