After putting together my Dubby Partners playlist, I got excited to make this playlist bringing together some great Hip-Hop songs, both the originals & the tracks that used them to create something totally new.

I always liked digging for the original sources of Hip-Hop tracks I like because usually I like the original better than the new version.

Here, both versions are cool. Rappers have transformed some breathtaking breaks, and beautiful hooks into wonderful new art in their own right, adding remarkable rhymes & smart stories.

These selections are some of my favorite hip-hop tracks, and/or I just like the choice of original song to sample, as well as what they do with it.

I learned a lot about what came before by digging to find out what they were sampling. A great resource to find out who sampled what is http://www.whosampled.com/. Check it out whenever you just have to know what that original tune was in such & such Hip-Hop song.

Hip-Hop artists did a lot to generate interest in obscure Funk, Soul, and Jazz.
