What differentiates Rock guitar playing from Funk guitarists?
In Funk music, the emphasis is on the first beat or The One. It all happens on the first beat of every measure, everything has to fall on The One — the moment of impact, the beginning of the groove.
This might be obvious for the drummer and bass player, but in Funk, the guitar player is in on this act too.
In most Rock music, the lead guitarist is less a part of the rhythm section. He jams, and takes solos far more often (and more flamboyantly) than a Funk guitar player does.
