[Jazz] Post your Jazz Playlists in here.

Hey guys,

In this thread i wanted to share my jazz playlists with you.

The first time i heard about jazz was in an interview with Radiohead. They mentioned Bitches Brew by Miles Davis as one of their inspirations. I bought the cd in 1997 but was shocked with the music. Its weird rhythms, harmonies (or lack of) and no song structure. I was used listening to alternative rock like Radiohead and Dinosaur Jr.

In 1998 i was going to concerts alot and my curiosity led me to a jam session in a jazz club. There were four people playing, drums, bass, piano and saxophone. It was then i heard and saw the magic of jazz. They were improvising arround a standard theme and they were really enjoying the jam. Creating 'new' music as they were playing. Since that day i understood what jazz was, but it still took me some more years to finally appreciate Bitches Brew by Miles Davis.

If you want to read more about jazz i can recommend this website: http://www.enjoyingjazzmusic.com/

And now for some jazz playlists i have created, enjoy:

1. Funky Jazz 2. Fusion Jazz from Poland 3. Spiritual Jazz / Free Jazz 4. Cool Jazz inspired by Miles Davis 5. Melancholic Jazz

Some interesting stuff posted I've never heard before. I may as well post a couple I have- just mine, and almost no one listens to the really old stuff.

The first is really roots stuff- New Orleans and Chicago Jazz, represented by Louis Armstrong and Bix Beiderbecke (I remember meeting his drummer as a kid) and others, then some later Chicago style from the Eddie Condon gang.

Then there's some Hard Bop, my favorite style overall. Art Blakey, Freddie Hubbard, Monk, Coltrane, Miles. I was really pleased to find the tunes "Mr. L" and "Flutie" (Yusef Lateef on flute), which were on an odd record album I had from way back and never thought I'd hear again.

So that's my 2 pesos.

(Edit: I guess there are a few in the first one that have disappeared. Bummer. I also get a kick out the fact that Eddie Condon's "Fidgety Feet" is flagged as explicit. Eddie would have gotten a chuckle out of that.

@Rayzeo Thanks for sharing. I quite liked the Dixieland playlist, altough it's not my favorite jazz genre. I hope you will finetune the playlist, 17 songs is too few and don't add too many songs by the same artist (louis armstrong, bix b).

Bytheway, i checked your profile and was amazed that you follow no one on Spotify. Why is that?

Thanks Jazzwhatever. Oh, those playlists were just a collection of a few tunes I like. I tend to put together playlists that last about an hour. Maybe I have a short attention span- perhaps it's just time limitations- like to get through a list in one sitting.

I'm very un-social network savvy. I don't even know what's involved in following. I just search for stuff and sometimes stumble on some good things. Thanks to you and others for sharing.

@Rayzeo The reason for me to follow people is that i like their music taste. Via their profile i can sometimes find other kinds of music. Also i have made some 'music friends' with this function. Because of one of this connections i could enter a special area of these forums and everntually became a Rockstar. I followed someone else and we have a jazz show for dutch radio together. So, you never know what following somone leads too. 🙂

Here is the one I made. I don't know much about Jazz but was introduced to these names while reading some Beat Literature

I listen to and love the old stuff. Give a listen to my Swing Brother Swing playlist. Althoughthe styles changed, I pretty much like music from all genres after electric recording came into being (starting around 1925).https://open.spotify.com/user/mosseye/playlist/691PyuUIapQo8SwdkCGlaO

@ucb2016 Thanks for sharing. I checked your profile and i really like your dopesick playlist, good theme and content. Well done!

@capasa605 Thanks for sharing. Interesting list, only don't add whole albums by one artist, try to add 1 or 2 songs max by 1 artist. The list contains some unknown jazz artists. Looks good so far!

@Rayzeo 2 nice ones!
I never listen to the really old Jazz because it sounds so dated, and the recordings aren't so great. But, the music is wonderful, so thanks for putting it together.
I bet it would have been fantastic to hear those guys live in 1922.
I wonder if the Hard Bop from the late 50s, early 60s will ever sound so dated? But, right now I don't think so because it's such timeless sounding music. And, the recordings (especially the Rudy Van Gelder ones) are impeccable.

I love the Latin Jazz vibe!

Here's a big Latin Jazz playlist for your enjoyment... https://open.spotify.com/user/1249158184/playlist/1W4QBGbRRKzg2Vi57202rB

I keep adding it to it. It's hardly all-inclusive because Latin Jazz is so vast.

Here is a new playlist i just created, Norway Nu Jazz, with nu jazz and electronic jazz from Norway. Releases from the 2016, back to the 90's. Featuring artists like bugge wesseltoft, nils petr molvaer and more unknown bands.

Besides creating playlists and being active on this forum i have my own radioshow on the the dutch station The Concertzender. The program is called Jazz Not Jazz. It features all kinds of modern jazz, nu jazz and experimental jazz. Here is a playlist that accompanies the radio program with a selection of tracks, updated each month:

Here is a funky Jazz playlist — just 6 long jams. I like to make "long jams 6 packs" — 6, 10 minute tunes for an hour of sonic pleasure.

Give it a listen...

Couldn't play your playlist, somehow.

Cool. Thanks for posting all of the details. Looking forward to listening to your show.

jazz for lovers playlist- really wonderful mix of all standard jazz romance. https://open.spotify.com/user/juliaaolsenn/playlist/64kb0INlK8VE3u8KjOJoWb

I've Got Rhythm playlist- mix of up beat jazz and standards.

https://open.spotify.com/user/juliaaolsenn/playlist/3x5BEXLwFDUSClsOFu7U4v

Earfood- more modern jazz, but very interesting.

https://open.spotify.com/user/juliaaolsenn/playlist/4CrCdp70eKUTuEEEIfWFn9

@juliaaolsenn Thanks for sharing. Jazz for lovers, a good theme. Don't put too much songs by the same artist in one playlist. Maximum of 2 songs by the same artist is the rule. Try to include unknown jazz artists in the list. Makes the list much more interesting (for me).

The same goes for Earfood. Make the list more compact. To be honest i don't see modern jazz here. Its all 60s jazz, apart from roy hargrove and a tribe called quest.

Nice idea, long jams 6 pack. Too bad 1 track isn't available in my country. I like the selection.
