Plan
Premium Student
My Question or Issue
Please extend Premium Student. I have had Spotify since 2016 and also have been a student since 2015. I am still (unfortunately) still a student in university. I am no longer allowed to have the student pricing since I have had it for 4 years. What is the purpose of this cap on years for students? Some of us don't graduate right on time. As long as I have a valid student email address, I don't see what is the issue. I don't want to have to switch to Apple Music just to get the cheaper price, but I can't afford 10$ a month while in Uni for Spotify, despite loving the service.
I know I am not the only one who has posted this request, but it always gets turned down when people request for this. It is just senseless to limit people even when they meet the rest of the credentials.
Solved! Go to Solution.
I wish Spotify could extend their discount to last up to nine years. Many people are still in college and need extra years to finish their classes before they graduate. Since the current discount only covers a maximum of four years, extending it would be really beneficial for them.
Bom dia.
Aguardo retorno.
Atenciosamente, Mayara.
Maxim,
That is not a "special exception." That is quite honestly very unfair and as the OP said, senseless. MANY students are taking way longer than 4 years, especially with inflation and cost of living skyrocketing. Also, you are only taking into account a BA. What about a masters? Doctorate? Any higher level of education? I'm required to get my masters to have a license to practice, so I literally cannot stop with a BA. I also have been in college part time, so it's taking twice as long as it would be if I were a full time student. Spotify loses customers by doing this, because I've heard from many of my friends that they stopped using Spotify at all after their 4 years of the student plan was up and refused to pay $12 a month for music, which is already a high price. Netflix doesn't even charge that much for their plan. The price for the student plan also used to be cheaper, but they recently raised the price. Spotify makes a lot of money already, no one can convince me that Spotify needed that extra dollar from college students who are already struggling. Especially when the student plan came with Hulu, I'm not going to pay $12 for music that I can get for free from YouTube while paying for a separate Hulu subscription. It says on the bottom of your comment that you are not a Spotify employee, so I'd love to know why you're sticking up for them. This is a terrible way to build brand loyalty. MANY jobs/degrees require more than 4 years. You can't be a doctor or nurse in 4 years with a BA. As a social work student, I can't get a BA and be done with it, I am legally not allowed to be a licensed social worker without a masters. There are so, so many professions that require you to go to a graduate program. In 2023, Spotify made $14.38 billion. They split revenue 70/30. That means their profit was 4,314,000,000. They could have split revenue 90/10 and guess how much money they would have made? $1,438,000,000. That's still a lot of money.
It definitely can be! That's ridiculous. Do you work for Spotify? A LOT of students don't graduate in 4 years and a LOT of professions REQUIRE more than 4 years. I legally have to get my masters to be a licensed social worker. I can't practice social work without a license. That means even if I got my BA in 4 years and my masters in 2, it would still take me 6 years to finish college, but that's not realistic. Why are you defending a company who made made $14.38 billion last year? They split revenue 70/30. That means their profit was 4,314,000,000. They could have split revenue 90/10 and guess how much money they would have made? $1,438,000,000. That's still a lot of money. You cannot honestly believe that Spotify needs the extra $6 from college students who are already struggling. This is also not a good way to build up brand loyalty. As literally hundreds have said in this thread, I will also be looking into switching to Apple music or Amazon. Spotify already makes you verify that you're a student, it wouldn't cause any extra trouble to let students have the plan until they're not a student anymore, and if they wanted further proof, it's very easy to submit a tuition bill/any other kind of document showing that you're a student this year.
I just discovered this thread after my own four year cap as come up and I must say that im disappointed in spotify. Going from 5.99 to 11.99 is a large jump for students like me and it does seem like judging the amount of people here saying they want to move to what is an inferior product should show that this 6.00 is worth a lot.
Firstly the global average is 8.7 years and thats was a found with minimal searching. So really the cap should at the very minimum be eight years.
But its not the point. Its the reply found here “
"We understand that things can feel frustrating when things don't work as you'd like them to”
In essence spotify, it sounds like your saying stop moaning life is not fair.
All the students here want to remain loyal but why should they when they are given nothing but placating shushing.
Spotify says
"Rest assured that we're always strive to improve."
the listen to your customer base from all over the world and remove the cap.
Move to Tidal like I have. Tidal has a student discount (same price as Spotifies discount) that lasts until you graduate! And, Tidal actually supports their creators unlike spotify...
You can also transfer music over with a click of a button for free, so it's was really easy to do.

My Question or Issue
I've used my 4 years of student plan and I wanted to know if it's posible, verifying that I'm still a student because my career is 6 years long, to keep having access to the plan.
I’ve just started a second degree after already doing one a few years ago. I used to have a Spotify student account, then switched to a family account, and now I’m returning as a student (with a valid student ID card) I’d like to get student discount again. Surely there is a way for customers to get this discount if they are in higher education for more than four years and/or do a second degree? For example I’ll be doing a PhD which will be a further 6 years part time!
I started my Spotify student journey in undergrad, and now aiming to achieve my degree from medical school it is unfair to cap the student renewal policy to just 4 years. It truly should be just ability to prove enrollment.
I study at a Sixth-Form collage in England and need to switch to a student account, but Spotify's guidelines currently mean Sixth-Form collages are ineligible
Hey @eotay07,
Thanks for reaching out.
Generally, Premium Student is only available to students at an accredited higher education institution
Since SheerID is handling the verification process, you can reach out ot them so they can double-check if you're eligible: https://support.sheerid.com/en-GB/help-center/contact-form 🙂
I hope this helps!
While I appreciate the opportunity this program offers to many students, it is disheartening that the policy does not account for students enrolled in degree programs that extend beyond four years.
As I approach the final stretch of my studies, I am not working as much in order to focus on completing my degree. The increased monthly cost of $13.99 is becoming increasingly difficult to manage, particularly in the current economic climate and with the rising cost of living. It feels especially discouraging given that I am still a full-time student.
I would be more than happy to provide official university verification confirming that my degree program exceeds four years in duration. I believe a more flexible approach to the student discount policy would better support students in varying academic circumstances.
I hope Spotify can take this into account for current and future students who face similar challenges.
here to add that i will also switch to apple music due to this!! they need to figure out a way to extend this or they’ll lose more subscribers (rightfully)
Perhaps Spotify could make the student premium discount longer thank 4 years because some students want to continue going on and get a masters degree after their initial degree and it would be really helpful if they could get their music at a discounted price after their original four years of getting a degree- as long as enrollment is verified at the post secondary institution
A lot of students like myself are still in college, some are still in college for taking a medical leave, some going for there bachelors degree after there associate degree, and some going for there masters after there bachelor degree. I believe it should be longer as long as we can show proof we are still in school each years
You allow a period of 4 years for every account, but when it finish, you don't allow that account to have an other period of Student access. I would like to say you that, some students has more than 4 years of studies and they are not covered. Another situation is that after a course, a student choose to continue their student career with an other university. They will be given another address and another institute account, and I think they should be allowed to get a new student subscription, so other 4 years.
I'm saying this because I think that one person could have more than one student premium, if they are going through more than one degree, and if you don't allow that because you think that is not fair, you would have that people will make a new account and they will use that new institute address to purchase the student premium.
So on my opinion, it would be more reasonable to limit the student discount to a maximum of 4 years per institutional email address, rather than per Spotify account. This way, people who are truly continuing their education can benefit from the student plan throughout their studies, and the cost remains affordable for them.
Except this isnt even true! It USED to be 4 years. Now it has changed to 5 as the standard In the U.S. so you're reasoning isn't even valid.
As most people in this thread have pointed out. There are such things as Masters and PhDs that students go on to do that last 2-5+ years. Not even mentioning extended Bachelors degrees. Having a limit of 4 years is unjustifiable is just cheap from Spotify. Very much considering switching! Other services are much cheaper and I can let another service 'export' my Spotify library.
I'm on a 5 year course and I've run out this month. Ill just make a family account with some friends I guess screw Spotify
