Question of the week: One Song That Defines You 🎵

Hey, hey 👋

This time, we're diving deep into what makes our musical taste unique.

Imagine you're meeting someone for the first time, and you can only play them one song to perfectly capture who you are. It's like a musical business card—it says it all without saying a word.

So, the question is:

If you had to introduce your music taste to someone using just one song, what would it be?

I'll start! Mine would be "Bohemian Rhapsody" by Queen. It's a little bit of everything—rock, opera, ballad—which perfectly represents my eclectic taste.

I love many Gender such as Rap, konpa, EDM and further; however this song is a live masterpiece for me.

Locust Laced by Sleigh Bells 😏🤙

Nice question, @Luan!

I found it rather difficult to select one song that most accurately conveys my music taste, just off the top of my head, so I thought of a few criteria for myself to use when considering the question, to help me select the right song:

  • The song is one that I’ve saved to my Spotify library (for me, this means that I would want to return to the song upon repeated listens, so it would also have to be a song that I keep in relevant playlists).
  • I need to be already quite familiar with the song, so that I'm confident that I won’t lose interest in it after repeated listens, even years later in the future
  • The song should ideally be one that represents multiple favorite genres of music, in order to encompass a broader spectrum of my music taste (similarly to how you decided to choose “Bohemian Rhapsody” as your favorite song).

So, after going through my playlists and looking for tracks that I've already listened to countless times, and which represent more than one of my favorite genres (which wasn’t too difficult, because my favorite genres for several years now have been psychedelic- and stoner rock, and I only needed to search through a few playlists), I chose a few “candidate songs” that represent both of these genres. Then I listened to these songs and chose my favorite one, just in terms of how “fun” it was for me to hear compared to the other "candidate songs" at that time.

I ended up choosing “Damned Rope” by Wet Cactus, which I would definitely recommend to any other listeners who especially enjoy instrumental songs in genres like psychedelic rock, stoner rock, heavy psych, etc.:

Very good question @Luan and not easy to answer at all, but I like to embrace the challenge 🙂

Soundtracks play a huge role in my music taste, that’s why I decided on Lumière from the game Expedition 33 which I’m currently obsessed with.

spotify:track:1A1XuDIYZxSKrQ6mzkWwAT

The song is lyrical and sad with classical elements which are also features I enjoy. And while it doesn’t capture everything I like in music, I’d still say it’s the one song that defines me the most.

In general I choose songs because of the memories they invoke in me and not their musical composition and it’s actually difficult for me to name the genre of a song.

In theory it's a difficult question. It's nebulous. I think the aspect that I enjoy the most of music is it's possibility to be timelessness. When I think of timeless one track comes to mind.

Sculpted by Haywyre cemented itself into my music catalogue back in 2014. Around the cusp of me delving deeper into electronic music. It stands out to me in how it playfully transitions between it's bass and glitch hop elements. It hits that sweet spot of a bass that makes my face scrunch up and sweet notes that wave around like they're floating. It remains one of my go-to tracks to adjust new devices.

That’s such a fun question, love the idea of a “musical business card.”

If I had to pick just one song, I’d go with “Viva La Vida” by Coldplay. It’s emotional, cinematic, and has that mix of reflection and energy that pretty much sums up my taste.

All 2 U on the helluva boss season 2 soundtrack

Mine would be Zero O'clock by BTS

It have a soothing music arrangement and comforting lyrics.

Mirage - Born to fly. Born to be free. This is my song of life.

ICE Agents will all face Justice in the near future by We the People 😍

I feel like the songs that define me are Daddy Issues (by the Neigbourhood), Sweater Weather (also by the Neigbourhood), No Pole (by Don Toliver), Falling Down (by lil peep ft. x), also LVL (by A$AP), I'll Take Care Of You (by Tyler, the Creator) and also SL*T ME OUT (by NLE). ofc there's like 1,000 more songs that I resignate with, but I cant think of any rn lol! these are also the artists I listen to the most

My initial thought was House Party by Super Junior, but then I remembered Hanryang exists. Literally either, I would have to flip a coin 😅

House Party - Super Junior

Imagine a 15-year-old K-pop group dropping their 10th album and deciding, “let’s make our title track a pandemic PSA — but funky.” It whiplashes between disco, trap, and moral messaging so fast it shouldn’t work, yet somehow does. The World Health Organization literally promoted it, which tells you everything about how bonkers (and brilliant) it is.

Hanryang - Heechul / Bibi / Kyunghoon

A song that started as a comedy skit and somehow turned into a legitimate chart-topper. It parodies macho historical dramas, goes way too hard for a joke song, and ends up being better than half the serious releases that year. It’s chaotic, brilliant, and very on-brand for a duo (Heechul and Kyunghoon) who make fun of K-pop by accidentally excelling at it.

Champion by Neoni and burnboy

Sorry for going off topic but... It's been years and the macOS app still doesn't have Spatial Audio enabled, how is that possible? It's beyond ridiculous that as paying consumers we are faced EITHER with the choice of Lossless audio OR Spatial Audio enabled, and not both??? Very disappointing.

Both songs are wild in concept but genius in execution, pure proof that K-pop can turn anything into a hit.
