Introducing great new ways to discover music

by Moderator on ‎2012-12-06 07:32 PM - last edited on ‎2015-09-23 07:03 AM by Community Manager (17,338 Views)

We're very happy to announce some major upcoming changes to Spotify. Never again will you have to ask the question "what should I listen to next?" as we're about to make music discovery easier and better than ever.

First up is the new Follow tab

Here you'll not only be able to see what your friends are listening to, but also what playlists they're creating and sharing. And it's not just your close friends  - we're happy to welcome on board real artists and tastemakers who'll keep you updated with the latest songs you have to hear.

Want to know what Bruno Mars is listening to right now, for instance? That's only a click away. Follow him you'll get an update as soon as his next album is out, too. Connecting with your favourite artists has never been this easy.

Whilst you're following lots of interesting new people, you'll also want to check out the Discover tab.

Here, we'll be your new best friend and offer handpicked recommendations that we think you'll love. We'll give you a full explanation of why we've picked each song too - like any best friend should.

You'll get concerts reviews, new people to follow, recent album releases and plenty more - all on the same page. That's more time spent listening to music that's right for you - and less time head-scratching.

Fancy something we've picked out? Add it to your Collection and it'll be waiting to be listened to whenever you feel like checking it out.

But wait, there's more! Last up is the Audio Preview feature.

With all this great new music you'll be discovering, you might not want to interrupt the song you're currently listening to. After all, why should the music ever have to stop?

Simply hover your mouse over a song that you fancy and you'll get a short snippet to listen to.Then save the song for later, play it in full or go right back to what you were listening. It's up to you.

The upcoming changes will be rolled out over the next couple of weeks. The first installment of these features will come very soon. So if you're keen to try out these for yourselves just hang on in there. A great new music discovery experience is on the way.

For any new updates as they come in, please subscribe to this thread:

Hey Richard!

Why you not announcement that METALLICA is in Spotify now?

But let me say this: you have best product ever I used for 2 years and those new cool features are so cool. I wait those... Please let me know download link from where I can download this cool update now, not in 2025. :D

I can't wait this for weeks before my client auto-update itself! I'm so ready for betatest this!

by International Sensation on ‎2012-12-06 09:41 PM

Looking forward to seeing these new features :D

by Multiple Award Winner on ‎2012-12-06 09:47 PM

Now all I need is repeat track mode! =)

by Festival Headliner ‎2012-12-06 10:12 PM - edited ‎2012-12-06 10:12 PM

OMG Metallica \m/

My first "real" music I've listened to, that's just great! :D

Also can't wait for the discover feature!

by David ‎2012-12-07 06:29 AM - edited ‎2012-12-07 06:38 AM

Also, here's a little video. Hope you like our new website too!

by on ‎2012-12-07 07:10 AM

Every single piece of hardware in that video is made by Apple!
Spotify = Apple Fanboys ;-)

You try and get out, but they pull you back in.
by on ‎2012-12-07 11:55 AM

Will the first users get the new desktop client with discovery this week or next?

by Festival Headliner on ‎2012-12-07 12:27 PM

The new website looks stylish too!

But I'm kinda missing a direct link to the community like it was before. Now you have to go to help -> support forum.

by boobooboy on ‎2012-12-07 02:25 PM

When will these new features (collections specifically) show up in the apps?

by on ‎2012-12-07 03:07 PM

It will come in two steps - some functionality as a major update to the desktop client in the next few weeks and the full cross platform update in Q1 2013.

But if the world ends in December 21th 2012, we will never be able to enjoy it. though. However the risk of an apocalypse is so low we don't need to count on it.

by boobooboy on ‎2012-12-07 03:26 PM

When you say "cross platform" for Q1, would that include iphone?

Should have held Metallica announcment until 12/20.  That would have been especially cruel.

by gautes on ‎2012-12-07 08:36 PM

Will this functionality come to the Windows Phone 7 and 8 apps?

Please? ;-)

Yes, this includes the iOS app.

by mattschreiber on ‎2012-12-10 08:34 PM

When will they be laucing the desktop update? Will premium members get it first?

by Multiple Award Winner on ‎2012-12-10 11:54 PM

I'm guessing by the end of 2012. Not sure though...

The mobile apps will be updated in early 2013.

by Community Manager on ‎2012-12-13 09:57 PM

We don't roll out based on subscription status. We'll update this thread once the roll out begins. At that time, everyone should be free to download the newest version from the Spotify website.

by on ‎2012-12-17 09:59 AM

One week left before christmas, I hope the roll out will be done before Christmas. Tomorrow it's only two weeks left on 2012, so I wonder if the roll out will be at all before that.

by mattschreiber on ‎2012-12-18 09:08 PM

Seriously... When are we getting this desktop update? =)

by Community Manager ‎2012-12-18 11:55 PM - edited ‎2012-12-18 11:55 PM

The first social discovery features should be available now. Just download the latest version of Spotify from our website.

by Festival Headliner on ‎2012-12-19 12:12 AM

Hmm still getting the version when I install the "new" version. :/

Tried reinstalling Spotify first, but same result.

by mattschreiber on ‎2012-12-19 12:13 AM

Yes same here... I am anticipating the "collecton" feature and the discover page and nither are avalible yet... Downloaded "new" versoin from website but still the same

by themadmen on ‎2012-12-19 12:25 AM

here too, still waiting to try tis.

by ChaseChaisson on ‎2012-12-19 12:38 AM

Same here.... not getting the new update... :(

by Multiple Award Winner on ‎2012-12-19 04:26 AM

Anyone have the direct file path so I can download the new update?

by takingbackbenny on ‎2012-12-19 07:06 AM

spotify rolled out for me this afternoon 19th December, 6pm, GMT+10 Sydney. No discovery tab or collection. But can follow artists etc. Looks to be "phase 1" as explained previously. Can't wait for discovery tab, but very happy with the new feature of following artists!

One thing I have noticed - they have completely removed the playlist time length altogether. Now have no idea how long a playlist will play for. Disappointing.. but hopefully something that is not gone forever.

by on ‎2012-12-19 08:06 AM

Could the ones who managed to download the new version send it over to me by a file sharing tool like sprend or yoursendit?

by fevre53 on ‎2012-12-19 09:33 AM

still nothing in my dimension not

by Multiple Award Winner on ‎2012-12-19 11:22 AM

They removed playlist runtime? WHAT THE HELL!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?

by David on ‎2012-12-19 11:43 AM

Discovery things will be rolled out later - follow will be the first thing you come across. However, as ever, we're doing a rollout with these things, in case something is actively on fire and we need to stop.

by on ‎2012-12-19 11:49 AM

I downloaded Spotify again - took 2 minutes longer this time, then installs it, but then nothing happen, spotify didn't start as used to be after installation and the version has not changed at all.

Is it meant that we should be able to download the new version now from

by Community Manager on ‎2012-12-19 01:17 PM

Hi guys,

My mistake. I thought I had tested this to confirm its availability but its not just yet.

While the rollout has started, it is not yet available from the Spotify website. However, it should be before too long. I'll find out and update you once it has been made available on the site.

by Multiple Award Winner on ‎2012-12-19 01:21 PM

Alright, no problem

I'm not sure I want to update if playlist runtime has been removed, like some people have said.

by on ‎2012-12-19 01:53 PM

Can you set descriptions to playlist now in this build?

by fevre53 on ‎2012-12-19 03:49 PM

made you wait

by Multiple Award Winner ‎2012-12-19 11:02 PM - edited ‎2012-12-19 11:02 PM

Please kudo my new idea so we can get the playlist length indicator back!

by Multiple Award Winner ‎2012-12-19 11:20 PM - edited ‎2012-12-20 02:02 AM

There is no better alternative, but I might cancel to speak my mind. I'm sick of Spotify not listening to our feedback!

I really don't want to have to if Spotify declines in usability.

by takingbackbenny on ‎2012-12-20 12:42 AM
I agree, very poor effort, thinking of removing my Premium subscription.
by Multiple Award Winner on ‎2012-12-20 12:44 AM

I won't cancel, but I would like to see improvement. Who thought remove playlist length was a good idea?

by fevre53 on ‎2012-12-20 07:27 AM

that it has a link to the beta?

by on ‎2012-12-20 03:22 PM

This is not the discovery version, but an little update aimed to developers, which introduces the new search feature!

by Zarouk on ‎2012-12-21 10:58 AM

by Festival Headliner on ‎2012-12-27 05:07 PM

The Web player is still in beta and the link was only available for a couple of people to test it. Guess Spotify is still "testing".

About the new desktop version: I'm still waiting too for it to be rolled out in my country...stuck on
