Recently played API endpoint does not show latest played tracks

Recently played API endpoint does not show latest played tracks

https://developer.spotify.com/console/get-recently-played/ is not giving me the latest played tracks anymore. Seems like it stopped updating a few hours ago.

I've tried listening both in the desktop client and on mobile. I'm playing normal tracks (not podcast episodes) and I'm not in private mode.

Happening both in an app I've registered and also when testing on https://developer.spotify.com/console/get-recently-played/

Is it just me?

Edit 9 Nov 2021: It stopped working everywhere now..

I'm under the suspicion it's IP address/network related. All devices on home wifi/network do not update. My mobile phone on 5G does update (but not when it's on the home wifi/network). Is this something you folks could check? I made a more extensive reply over here: https://community.spotify.com/t5/Ongoing-Issues/Mobile-Recently-Played-not-updating/idc-p/5290094/highlight/true#M119960

And it's purely the recently played endpoint. All the others seem to work fine.

It's really hit and miss at the moment. I'm noticing significant gaps in the recently played response between8am and 10am, and again between 12pm and 4pm. The tracks played never actually appear in the response, either, so when it does start working again, they're lost in my recently played feed.

Seems like there are possibly a few issues here, but it's incredibly unreliable at the moment

get-recently-played is working for me on mobile (Android 11, Oxygen OS) but not on desktop (Windows 11). In the actual desktop app there is a recently played list which *does* keep up to date but the end-point is somehow not up-to-date with the local recently played list. This stopped working on November 2 for me. Mobile works fine (you have to listen to a song for 30 seconds+ and not skip or change track for it to register on recently played) but sometimes reports a track as listened to twice especially when locking the phone during streaming of the song. The issue with get-recently-played is especially evident when using Spotify Connect where if the song ends on the desktop it is not registered, whereas on mobile it does register.

Edit: It also works for Desktop when playing a song from an album but does not work from a playlist.

EDIT2: It also works if you follow these steps (for a single song at a time):

  1. Close Spotify app on Desktop
  2. Start song on Mobile
  3. Start Spotify app on Desktop
  4. Using Spotify Connect change from Mobile to Desktop
  5. The song is now working in recently played.

To change song you must now use Spotify Connect to switch back to Mobile, then start a new song and then switch back to Desktop and it works.

This leads me to believe that if you initialize the song on a working device and then switch via Spotify Connect it works as intended. Maybe this is due to how a song is initialized on the playback backend on certain devices?

Only when use the mobile app the songs counts as listened, but if my desktop app is beeing used, this endpoint ignores the recently played songs.

I've found that restarting the app (either on mobile, or my macbook), kicks things back in to motion again. I monitor my recently listened for a personal project, so when I notice it not updating i can easily trigger it in to working again now.

Seems like the glitch is further back down the line, the data not actually leaving the client (as some have already mentioned). quite a big issue for all kinds of reporting, I imagine, if the clients aren't actually reporting what's been played. It also reflects in my play history in the client itself, I can be missing chunks of tracks at a time.

Hopefully spotify can resolve this soon!

I try this fix and didn't work for me. Tracks played on Windows10 are not recorded in the history. Android works.

Hey all, thanks for reporting issues with the recently played API. We're looking into this further here. I'll post again in this thread when I have an update to share.

Just an update from my findings - it's totally dead today. No updates to recently played since last night via https://api.spotify.com/v1/me/player/recently-played - Listening on various devices (mac, android, web). Restart app makes no difference.

Hopefully you guys can get to the bottom of this

Can confirm the same as @markgs21. For me it started working again some time after I reported two weeks ago, but today nothing gets reported.

Yep. I have experienced intermittent issues over the last few weeks where ios wasn't reporting while web was, but today nothing is being reported on any platform, not since 1700 UTC yesterday.

Problem solved after i updated my desktop app.

The problem still exists. Only 5 recently played tracks (of more than 200) updated since 11-03-2021

The good side of that problem: There are no more commercials placed since then (Free Account)

It seems to be working for me today - so far at least. Normally it's bad in the mornings but so far, every track today has appeared. We might be moving in the right direction

Recently played worked in Windows for like one day and then stopped working again. Frustrating.

Update: it seems to be working for me on Windows and iOS again

Been happening for us ever since we tried using this endpoint for our app 2 weeks ago. I don't think we can rely on this for anything serious.

Since updating last week - my last played as been working perfectly again. It's not ideal if you're building something for multi users, but in my instance, it's just me using it, so I can ensure my spotify apps are up to date.

I am still having the same issue. Only songs triggered in web player appear in "Recently Played" endpoint. I expect that it is always just the last tracks regardless where played, if auto played as next song in playlist, queue or manually triggered!
