My Question or Issue
The automatic payment in December failed. I'm not sure, but it seems that the premium family subscription as a result stopped or was suspended.
Should I now wait for next automatic payment date, or should I resubscribe?

The first thing you should do is check your account overview to see its current status:
https://www.spotify.com/account/overview/
I guess you'll need to update your payment method if it show as Free.
