We know that our users love creating their own playlists to capture key moments in time – in fact, playlists created by users often become their most-streamed playlist for the first several months but listening to these playlists slowly fades overtime, and users are eager to discover new music.
With this in mind, we’re excited to launch a new play mode called Smart Shuffle that keeps listening sessions fresh and provides personalized recommendations that perfectly match any listeners’ playlist vibe.
This update will roll out to Premium users on mobile devices starting today.
How does Smart Shuffle work?
Introductory page
How the queue will look
Adding and removing recommendations.
Different playback options.
What about the Enhance feature?
For now, Smart Shuffle will replace the Enhance feature.
What will happen to Discover Weekly and other regularly updated playlists?
For the time being, no changes to those will be made. Smart Shuffle aims to improve the listening experience for user curated playlists.
Does this mean that using Smart Shuffle will cause my carefully curated playlists to get cluttered with new recommendations?
No! Your original playlist remains untouched, so you can add any new track that catches your ear. Smart Shuffle won’t change your playlist without your explicit permission. What changes instead is what you'll hear during each specific listening session
🌟 I would like to disable Smart Shuffle permanently. Can I do that?
Yes, you can! Just go to Settings and privacy and then to Playback and toggle the option Enable all play modes to off. This will mean you will only have the regular shuffle.
Note: This option is for Premium users only.
We hope you're as excited as we are about this new play mode. The official Newsroom announcement is out, you can check that out too. For any and all feedback on the matter you may have, you're more than welcome to comment in the thread below.

Hi, maybe this article can help you out. 🙂
This is the worst/dumbest feature ever. No matter what I do I CAN'T stop this. Autoplay is off and I check 1,000,000 times that my playlist is set to regular shuffle not smart shuffle and it still puts **bleep** in my queue that isn't part of my playlist. If you're in your queue and tell it not to recommend a song it's still if the GD queue unless you also tell it to remove from queue. wth is the point of paying for premium and still having to deal with the most asinine sh*t? Get rid of this sh*t!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
i have a playlist thats predominatly rap and yall keep recomending me shitty bubble gum pop music and somehow kpop??? thats not the music that i listen to wth?? delete**bleep** now!!!!
Think we could get a setting for ratio of playlist:smart suggested songs with smart shuffle on?
Ideally the options of 3:1, 2:1, 1:1, 2:2, 3:3, 1:2, and 1:3
Please make Smart Shuffle optional to free users. This one feature has made me committed never to buy premium. Honestly it disgusts me that you need to make basic things such as actually playing the things I put on playlists require the paid premium plan. If i wanted to listen to the radio, I could tune in for free without my data being sold to advertisers.
Please add an option to turn off Smart Shuffle
The lag in toggling between the shuffle modes is way too long
Cycling between the modes should take less that 20 milliseconds.
This might be the worst feature yet, Spotify. Please remove it completely – or at the very least, create a button that says «Never ever smart shuffle».
Yes!-- Absolutely terrible and should be removed completely . . . . Maybe removed by pressing a button in Settings nicely labeled-- "Remove all traces of the so-called Smart shuffle."
Hi there folks,
We're here to say that we've taken your feedback into account and you will now be able to disable Smart Shuffle from the app settings, as described in this now implemented idea!
The steps are as follows:
This is for Premium users only and is only available on mobile at the moment, but rest assured it will be coming to desktop in due time as well.
Cheers!
Hey, Joan! Thank you very much! I came here to say I've just read an article on Android Authority about this change, but you have already posted it here.
Unfortunately this is only available for premium subscribers, which means I'll continue using the web version as a PWA. But I'm really happy for the people who will finally be able to turn this nightmare off for good within the app!
Thanks!
Awesome update! I love the idea of Smart Shuffle keeping my playlists fresh without messing with my carefully curated tracks. The way it adds personalized recommendations without changing the original playlist is a huge win. I also think it’s cool how we can remove recommendations we don’t vibe with, making it more tailored to my tastes.
I’ve been looking for ways to keep my listening experience new, and this feature is perfect for that! I’m definitely excited to try it out. And hey, if I can’t decide whether to add a song, maybe I’ll just let the decision be made with a coin flip!
Redacted by me, user
no such option for desktop client, at least on windows, please add it there as well, because right now using shuffle on desktop with this unwanted feature is very unpleasant
this**bleep** feature please remove it or have it off by default.
