App crashing constantly in background

App crashing constantly in background

Plan

Premium

Country

USA

Device

iPhone 14 Pro

Operating System

iOS 17 (Had same issue with iOS16)

For past 2 weeks or so my Spotify app has been crashing constantly when running in the background.

App works fine if I leave it open, but once my phone locks or I move off Spotify and it runs in the background, it crashes within 30 seconds.

App is also very slow and unresponsive. I previously had iOS 16, but upgraded to iOS 17 hoping this would fix the issue but it did not.

I have also tried the other suggestions that have been made in the past:

-Uninstall/delete data, clean install.
-I updated to iOS 16.4, had same issue.
-I updated to iOS 17, still same issue.
-Turn off phone, wait and clean install.
-Clear cache
-Removed all downloads and other data.

Please help with this, as it has made the app completely unusable at this point.

Hey everyone,

It seems like this thread has a few different issues. Note that:

  • If you're experiencing the issue of the app crashing while playing music: send over a video of the issue; the make, model and exact OS version of your device; the exact Spotify app version you're currently running and a timestamp of when it happened. This will help our teams continue their investigation.
  • If you're experiencing the issue of the app crashing when transitioning to a song: please make sure to add your reports to this thread that has been created specifically for this issue.
  • If you're experiencing the issue of the app crashing when you open it: this should be fixed now. Make sure to keep your app updated so that you don't miss out on any fix.
  • If you're experiencing general performance issues without the app crashing: make sure to specify it in your next message.

Thanks for your patience. We'll be on the lookout for your replies.

I tried all the same steps as @WalterSobchak23 to no avail. The app doesn’t last two minutes without crashing and has been very slow for months now. It’s become unusable for anything mobile and it’s very saddening because I really like Spotify, but it’ll crash very quickly anytime it’s in the background. I was hoping it was too many downloads. I’ve tried

  • deleting all downloads and emptying cache
  • logging out and back in
  • clean uninstalls/reinstalls
  • restarting my phone
  • leaving Spotify uninstalled for 8+ hours before reinstalling

None of these have worked and I’m unsure of even how to get actionable support on this. It’s disappointing. Any help is appreciated!

Spotify: 8.8.96.395

iPhone 12 Pro

iOS 17.1.2

I'm reaching the decision to unsubscribe to Spotify. If I can't use it, then what's the point of keeping it.

Despite attempting the same steps as @WalterSobchak23, the issue persists. The app consistently crashes within a minute and has exhibited sluggish performance for several months. Initially attributing the problem to my iPhone 13, I switched to an iPhone 15, but the issue persists, spanning over 4 months.

Current App and Device Information:
- Running Spotify version 8.8.96.395.
- Using iPhone 15 with iOS 17.2 (21C62).

Troubleshooting Steps Taken:
- Uninstalled/deleted data and performed a clean install.
- Powered off the phone, waited, and performed a clean install.
- Cleared cache.
- Removed all downloads and other data.
- Conducted a clean reinstall.
- Ensured "Allow background data usage" was enabled.
- Logged out and back in.
- Conducted multiple clean uninstalls/reinstalls.
- Restarted the phone.

Issue Description:
- Spotify consistently crashes when running in the background, despite exhaustive troubleshooting.

Request for Assistance:
- None of the aforementioned solutions have proven effective, and I'm uncertain about how to obtain actionable support. Any help is appreciated!
- If the issue remains unresolved, regrettably, after many years as a loyal customer, I may have to consider canceling my subscription.

Thanks,
Sara

Hey folks,

Thank you for your patience.

We can confirm that the right folks are aware of the situation and are currently working on a solution for this issue. We don't have a specific date for this to be resolved, but we hope it will be as soon as possible.

We'd also recommend having your Spotify app updated, so you don't miss any improvements coming your way.

If anything else comes up, don't hesitate to ask.

Thanks. But to be honest: I’m getting impatient. It’s already nearly three months since the problem occurred. Three months of full payment for Spotify without being able to use it. The browser version isn’t the same like the app… The last update of Spotify was a month ago. So it doesn’t look from outside like that Spotify is working on it with high pressure.

I agree. I've been generous only because I just went through Christmas and was incredibly busy and didn't have time to pay attention to what was going on. Now that Christmas is over and money will begin to get tight, unless something changes, I'm dropping Spotify. I've got other podcatchers that I'm sure work just fine.

I am having the same issue, music stops playing after 30 seconds and app crashes and my phone is super hot. I just updated my phone to iOS 17.3 in hope that would solve it, but it didn’t. I have an iPhone 12, this just began happening this morning. I really hope it resolves.

A new update was released today. And no surprise: the issue is not fixed. To be honest: after three months I‘m deeply disappointed by Spotify. I will now cancel my subscription. Apple Music is at least offering a stable service…

It keeps on crashing & stopping music. I can only listen to a song fully when I’m on the app, if I leave it on background it goes on for a few minutes then crashes

I have the same issues with my spotify app on my iphone 11 and it started around the time, when this thread opened. I am STILL having those issues, and I won't listen to music on spotify much longer, if this won't be fixed soon ... this issue is all over the internet with the exact same solution tips and nothing works. PLEASE FIX IT IMMEDIATELY

I have the same issue for months now as well on my iPhone 15 Pro Max (17.2.1) and Spotify version 8.9.8.487.
Have tried all the troubleshooting steps and nothing helps. App is VERY slow to respond and shuts down constantly.

Shocking that a tech company like Spotify is not able to fix this issue for months. This should be front and centre of your issues list…close to cancelling my subscription

Hi Novy, I tried all of it. The final answer of the Spotify technician was: „We cannot do anything about it yet. We are working on the issue.“ It doesn’t look like this… The problem occurs since November on my phone and is still not resolved! Four months later!!! My patience is over

My problem is that it crashes whenever I listen to podcasts. I’ve tried these solutions and they don’t seem to work.

I've been experiencing this issue for months on my iPhone 14 pro. I have tried clearing the cache, clean reinstalling, keeping Spotify and my iOS updated, and I have background app refresh on. I also have gone through this thread and tried all suggestions to no avail. Been having this issue since last September hoping it gets fixed soon.

Have the same problem. App is slower than ever. It crashes every 30 seconds. This sucks.
