My Question or Issue

Recent bug seems to have appeared when playing audio on Spotify via apple car play. Audio will randomly pause and the user will  be unable to resume/play the audio. The UI will either display as ’playing’ with no audio or time progress appearing or it will not allow you to play.

The only fix is to open the mobile device, terminate the Spotify app and reopen it on the mobile device.

I have tried to understand the trigger of the bug but I am unsure, it appears to happen randomly.

I have checked mobile connection in all instances and 5G/4G is available. All other applications do not encounter this issue.

The issue is with CarPlay its more widespread than just Spotify , problem is when the iPhone receives a notification of any kind the music is silenced but the progress bar of the song playing keeps going forcing one to exit CarPlay or disconnect/reconnect to resume , work around go to the in vehicle settings for Carplay from the touchscreen while connected in your vehicle and turn notifications off or try turning driving focus on, also if your car is equipped with Alexa try disabling it from your vehicle settings. menu.

Same intermittent Spotify issue here. Seems to have started after updating to iOS 17.4. When this happens, I am able to play downloaded music from my phone using Apple Music, and Apple Podcasts and NPR One stream without issue. I've tried force-closing and reopening Spotify, but it still won't play.

iPhone 15 Pro Max

iOS 17.4.1

Spotify 8.9.32.586

2017 Honda Accord

I think there have been quite a few people, myself included that have listed the phone OS version, and Spotify version. I have also listed the make\model of my car. And included troubleshooting steps.

The issue I reported happened again this morning, Spotify appears to work, but no sounds occur. I can swap over to Youtube Music which immediately works, which leads me to the opinion that Spotify is the issue currently.

Hey folks,

Thanks for all the info you've sent so far.

In order to keep investigating, we'd need you to confirm the exact time and date (including your time zone) when you experienced this issue.

We'll pass this info on to the right team.

Thanks!

My Question or Issue

Hi, often when I connect to CarPlay all seems to be working, skip buttons change track, but no sound.

car is 2016 Audi connected by usb

phone changed 3 months ago

regards

Andrew

I’m having the same problem also it’s really annoying I pay for Spotify just to use in the car and it never works lately

this is the screen when the problem occurs.

Hello

I have exactly same problem and it is easily reproduced.

1- Listen spotify on car play

2- your travel finishes/you leave the car, listen something from another app like youtube/storytel etc

3- Get in the car/connect carplay/open spotify via car play

4- No sound, it can not play anything on spotify although you see the interface

This does not happen with other apps like storytel.

and I am using carplay on my minicooper for 4 years and this was not the case before. this problem started for the last couple of months. the only workaround is restarting the app on the phone. it is annoyin and not safe while driving.

Hey @Jetsetcarwash

Welcome to the Community!

Thank you for bringing this to us, let's take a look at this together shall we.

Have you tried connecting with another phone to see if the same thing will happen there as well? This sounds like it might have something to do with background data, so we'd suggest clearing your apps cached data. A heads up, after clearing your cache you will have to re-download your music as it will be removed from your downloads.

Hope this help out, keep us posted.

Cheers.

Many thanks Martin,

I don’t have the option to try another phone, I’ve cleared cache so will report back (doesn’t happen all the time) I never downloaded music, I just listen to suggestions.

not sure if pulling all my apps across from my old phone may be unreliable?

Andrew

Glad it’s not just me, starts happening the last month or so too. Fixes I’ve found are turn off phone and car and start again then it’s fine, but if I’m already driving and playing a podcast via apple podcasts then want to splay Spotify it will play nothing at all. iPhone15, up to date iOS and an Audi a3 current year model. Any idea of when a fix will be out? Was working perfectly before this iOS update

have the same issue as well, iphone 15 and app is fully updated. not all the time but most mornings i have to open and close the app on my phone for spotify to work on carplay

Hey there @Jetsetcarwash

Thanks for your reply.

No worries, that shouldn't affect the app's performance. Just to confirm, has this issue started happening when you changed phones?

If you're still experiencing this behavior after clearing the app's cache, could you give a different internet connection a go to see if that does the trick?

Keep us posted on how it goes.

I thought this was related to a network problem rather than Spotify. I reset network settings and it bought me a couple of days before it started happening again. We're back to looking at Spotify to get this sorted.

Thanks for a solution if it works but there’s no way they can be correct, it’s only just started happening and seemingly to a lot of people, and there must be something wrong with the app if it only happens in certain situations and it never used to before. If I get in the car and play Spotify right away it works but if I play a podcast and Spotify after it doesn’t work. There’s something wrong with Spotify if that’s happening

Removing network settings seems a bit extreme. Are you saying this gets done once, and the problem goes away, or does it require to be completed every time there is an issue?

Resetting network settings did not solve the problem

Yep, I spoke too soon. Resetting the network settings bought me two days and then it started happening again. Back to looking at Spotify for answers. Sorry for the false hope.

Hello Eni,

only happens in the car, so internet not applicable? Still happening despite cache clear.

A

Hey there,

thanks for keeping us in the loop @Jetsetcarwash!

To confirm, did you experience any similar issues while using Spotify in the car with your previous phone?

Also, I see you that mention using USB. Just to make sure we cover all bases, could you double-check so that the cable is compatible to your device? You can also give another USB cable a try.

Regarding the internet connection, if the issue should persist, it would be great if you could give another internet connection a shot (if possible). For example, if a friend or a family member have a mobile device available, they can create a hotspot on that device, and you can temporarily connect your own device to that connection, to see if it makes a difference.

Let us know how it goes.
