Discover Weekly and Private Mode

Hi there,

I've seen conflicting answers on whether or not private mode means Spotify doesn't pay attention to your listening history.

In an article a Spotify representative said

"Use “private mode” if you don’t want Spotify to pay attention. “Maybe your girlfriend is really into death metal,” says Newett. “We just ignore those [private mode] track plays.” "

But a moderator on here said

"it doesn't make any difference if you use Private session or not."

Which one is correct at the moment? I have a friend with different music tastes to me who uses my account in private mode.

Hi @ledgeja, some reading materials and further info on how Discover Weekly works can be found here.

Your playlist is set to private by default and is based on your listening history and the listening history of others with similar tastes to you.

Is there still a listening history when Spotify is played in Private Mode?

I understand that Dicsover Weekly is based on your listening history.

When private mode is on is your listening history switched off?

Hi @ledgeja, tested it on my end and confirmed with my fellow Rock Stars -- listening history remains on when in private mode. Hope that helps!
