Group session drops when switching to airplay

When listening as a participant in a group session and switching from a spotify connect (or listening on phone) to an airplay device my spotify leaves the group session and I have to re-join to remain in sync

Hey there @ryansouza,

Thank you for posting in the Community!

We see what you mean, but please be aware that Group Session is in Beta, which means it’s being tested and features there could change.

At the moment this is actually an expected behavior of the app while playing on the same device in a group session.  The session here detects a new unrecognized device (regardless of the fact that you're might be logged to that device as well) and that is why the current session drops. You'd need to open the invitation link from the device you're planning to use in the group session for it to be recognized and allowed to participate. Switching to another device in mid-session would cause the connection to drop for that device, especially when using AirPlay as the Apple ecosystem is a closed one and usually has additional limitations when it comes to non-native apps and devices.

When connecting other devices, via Bluetooth for example, you shouldn't have such issues though. For more info on how the Group sessions are designed to work on speaker devices for example check out this support article here

Hope this clears things up. If you have any questions or need anything else, the Community is here for you.
