I can't get my ipod to pop up on spotify... help?

I got a new ipod. I am trying to use Spotify to put all the music on it. But when I plug my ipod up, nothing pops up under "Devices" on Spoitfy. Its not a touch or anything. Its a Nano 1st generation. Can someone please tell me why its doing this? I have hundreds of songs on there I want on my ipod and I need to figure this out.

I have never been able to get my 1st generation nano to work, no idea why cause my 5th generation one works fine! 

Just use iTunes to sync it, its not worth the hassle really!
