Spotify app crashing repeatedly on iPhone. Clean reinstall ineffective.

Spotify app crashing repeatedly on iPhone. Clean reinstall ineffective.

This started happening out of the blue. I have tried doing a clean reinstall of the app twice now as outlined on the community website: https://community.spotify.com/t5/FAQs/Perform-a-clean-reinstall-of-the-app/ta-p/4746485 However, this has not fixed my problem. I am able to listen to about 30 seconds of a song before my app crashes. When I reopen it shows the song up to play but no time elapsed. It seems that when I keep the app running in the foreground of my iphone the song will play for longer, but it will inevitably crash. I don't know why I pay for premium for this.

My Question or Issue

The app automatically closes itself after approximately 1 minute, even from the background, when the screen is turned off. Once restarted the song goes back to the starting point.

I am also facing the exact same issue on my Iphone 16 pro. The app automatically closes and its so frustrating

Original poster here. This issue has persisted for 3 months with zero fixes. I have been a spotify user for 14 years and am immensely disappointed by this. I agree that I may finally have to switch services as well. An otherwise useful product is now completely broken for me.

All follow-up questions from Spotify support want to indicate that the issue is somehow on my end. It is not. It happens on friend's devices using my account. Any media played using wifi or data will inevitably cause the app to crash. This problem does not occur in offline mode with downloaded songs/podcasts. No settings changes or updates have resolved this issue.

For others experiencing this problem there is some indication that I have "liked" too many songs. One suggested solution was to create a new account and migrate what they could over, which would not be all of my profile data. I could not get a guarantee that would fix the problem, and it would negate the whole point of committing to a platform and curating a music collection on there. I am skeptical this is the issue anyways.

Curious if other people have "liked" an inordinate number of songs.

TLDR: 3 months no fixes, no answers, no help = wasted money, unsatisfied long-time customer

Hello, I’m also facing this issue on my iPhone 15 pro max. Happy to hear that other people are also having this issue and that it’s not just me, but disappointed to see throughout this thread that this issue has not been addressed.

It is beyond frustrating and restricts me from listening to any music. Can the devs PLEASE escalate this internally and address this, as it is affecting a lot of users.

Facing the same issue since quite some time. Would really like some resolution. Able to stream without any issues on macOS, however, on my iPhone it keeps on crashing randomly, and once it does, there is no deterministic way to get out of the loop. It seems to happen with or without CarPlay - and it is extremely annoying & frustrating to not have the ability to play music when on long drives even after paying for it. Have tried restarting the phone, clean install of spotify, even deleted all the offline music, logging out & logging in to Spotify - nothing seems to work. Number of liked songs < 1k, other playlists I have in my library are not large either. Details:

Spotify version: 8.9.94.418

Request to please prioritize and provide a resolution for this. If we are paying for the service, the expectation is that it should be available for most of the time.

My Question or Issue

The app crashes a few seconds after the screen is locked and stops playing music. Same thing happens when app is running in background.

Having gone through the existing open issues - starting a new post as the previous one is no longer receiving any active updates from Spotify support even though multiple people are stuck with the same issue and are commenting on the same post.

Spotify crashes randomly on my iPhone. There is no deterministic way to fix it except a clean re-install. Unfortunately, performing clean re-installs is not something I want to be doing every time this happens. Sometimes clearing the Spotify cache helps - however, it does not work for every instance. Another thing to note is that, if the phone has the application running in foreground, it does not crash - only crashes if it is pushed to background (which is even if the screen gets locked while the app is open).

I am facing the issue since quite some time. I am able to stream without any issues on macOS. I have not observed very closely (will do so going forward), but it is possible that this is happening every time the Spotify app is updating on my iPhone. It seems to happen with or without CarPlay - and it is extremely annoying & frustrating to not have the ability to play music when on long drives even after paying for streaming.

I have tried restarting my phone, even deleted all of my offline music, logging out & logging in to Spotify - nothing seems to fix the problem permanently. Number of liked songs < 1k, other playlists I have in my library are not large either. Details:

FWIW I am still having this issue and have given up. Spotify support seems disinterested in providing solutions.

any update on this topic??

Nothing, the same error and it hasn’t fixed

The issue seems to have miraculously resolved for me. Doesn’t seem to be due to any update. My best guess is it is one two things: 1) I changed my Spotify password recently. I’ve had weird issues in the past with my Spotify getting hacked for ghost plays so maybe there was a security issue; or 2) I joined a jam session over Bluetooth and the problem seems to have resolved right afterwards. I know this has always been a screwy Spotify feature anyways that has often caused my app to crash when trying to use it.

I don’t really understand why either of these may have fixed the issue and I can’t be sure they were in fact the fix. But these are the only factors that have been followed by change.

Curious if either of these work for other folks having this issue.

Just changed the Pw but same issue as before…

Did you try the jam session?

Hey there folks,

Thanks for all your replies and for the info shared.

@hughbob92, we really appreciate you keeping us in the loop. Would you mind sharing with us the exact Spotify version you're running at this moment?

Folks, would you mind checking if you have a new version of the app available to install on the App Store? If yes, update the app to see how it goes.

If this continues to happen, please share with us the exact Spotify version you're running.

We'll be on the lookout for your replies!

Hi Aleja

I have been having this issue since months only on my Iphone 13 Pro now running on IOS18.2

Spotify version 9.0.2.419

No issues at all on my laptop running on Win10, nor on my other cell phone, which is a Samsung Galaxy A54 on Android 14.

Please solve the issue by mid Jan or I am forced to switch to Apple Music

Thanks

I am planning to switching to Amazon music because of this same problem. This is ridiculous!

Hey folks,

This should now be fixed, but if you happen to experience this issue again, please try the following:

  • Perform a clean reinstall of the app to make sure it's up-to-date and to remove any damaged cache that may be causing this issue.
  • Disable Background App Refresh as it can help with improving your iPhone's battery life and performance
  • Try a different internet connection
  • Log out of your account and back in twice in a row to make sure everything's synced.

Take care.

Hi,

I did all of this. It worked for about 3 songs and then it started to do
the same thing again.

Hi Dessi,

the app closed a couple of time at the beginning as before, then it has started working properly. The app works even better, it reacts faster and it´s possible to enjoy using it again! Thanks!
