Spotify on iPhone keeps playing even though I paused it!

I've noticed that I'll be listening to Spotify on my iPhone, and then go to pause it, and somehow later it starts up again and plays. Even though I can't actually hear music playing, the play button icon in the corner is there and it manages to drain my battery because it plays without me knowing. So I have to go and force quit Spotify. Any suggestions?

I'm getting the same behavior today on the Mac desktop version of spotify. I hit pause and while working in other apps, or even while I'm away from my desk, it randomly starts playing again after a minute or two.

Added another thread specific to the desktop on mac: Spotify desktop randomly starts playing in the background even though paused
